Dear Colleagues,
In order to achieve a stable KLM operation and reduce non-performance costs, three measures have been taken within Airframe to temporarily release qualified KLM E&M personnel for the KLM fleet. The proposed measures do not result in redundancy and all positions will remain. The relevant colleagues were informed of this yesterday and today. It will have a significant impact on the teams and we ask for everyone's flexibility. These are difficult decisions that affect our people. The measures are of urgent importance so that KLM & KLM E&M are able to improve operational performance and achieve financial objectives in the coming years. More information on this will be provided in E&M Scope. Last Tuesday, KLM’s executive board met during a team building and strategy day (Bosdag). Several topics were discussed, including KLM’s Flight Plan for 2024 and Funding our Journey. For KLM, 2024 will be all about stabilising operations, transforming the organisation and maintaining financial performance. Extra attention will have to be paid to costs in order to achieve this. Unfortunately, costs will continue to rise as a result airport charges, fuel, non-performance costs and collective labour agreement increases. For this reason, KLM E&M has also been asked to contribute and keep a close eye on costs. It’s important for us to make a concerted effort to maintain and improve financial performance so that we can continue to grow and be successful in the future.
Last Tuesday, the EMT++ also met during a team building and strategy day (Bosdag) to discuss plans for the coming year. During the meeting, the findings of the KLM E&M Employee Survey for 2023 were also discussed. You will soon be able to read more about our plans for the year ahead and how we plan to implement them to fulfil our vision and achieve our objectives.
E&M Airframe has tightened its policy on safety boots. Wearing safety boots is now compulsory for all employees and visitors when entering the Hangar floor, apron area, warehouse or workshop. Some exceptions have been made to the site-specific policy. Additional emphasis is also placed on compliance with Schiphol’s Regulations applicable within the Engineering Area. For example, you are not allowed to apply for a day pass to the Engineering Area if you forget your Schiphol Pass. It is your own responsibility to carry your Schiphol Pass with you. You can read more about this in this edition of E&M Scope.
At KLM E&M, we strive to be a diverse and inclusive employer. We therefore decided to offer E&M-wide communications (excluding line communications) in both Dutch and English within KLM E&M from 1 February 2024. KLM E&M has welcomed a growing number of English-speaking employees in recent years and expects this number to grow steadily. To ensure that everyone feels at home and to break down language barriers, KLM E&M is switching to using both languages in communication. We hope this will contribute to an even more inclusive working environment at KLM E&M.
“If you quit once, it becomes a habit. Never quit!” - Michael Jordan
Let’s take this Michael Jordan quote to heart and keep working to achieve our goals. Let’s not give up when faced with challenges and setbacks, but make a determined effort to succeed. Together, we can overcome challenges and be inspired by these words. Best Regards,

Necessary interventions in Airframe
In order to achieve a stable KLM operation and reduce non-performance costs, three proposed measures have been taken within Airframe to temporarily release qualified KLM E&M personnel for the KLM fleet.
What is happening? In recent years, KLM E&M has experienced a significant outflow of qualified personnel due to the COVID-19 pandemic and retirements. Despite a tight labor market, KLM E&M hired 420 new (unauthorized, inexperienced) employees last year. However, training employees to become fully deployable Aircraft Mechanics and GWKs takes time. There are also still problems with the worldwide supply chain for materials. The phasing in of the new fleet types A320 and A350 requires extra capacity for training, and there is an increased variety of aircraft types, which requires a different approach. Currently, there is still not enough qualified personnel for the total workload. This combination of factors makes organizing planned and unplanned maintenance until 2029 more complex than usual and the Airframe-wide workload is greater than the number of available personnel.

Proposed measures at Airframe In order to achieve a stable KLM operation and reduce our non-performance costs, the current situation requires temporary and structural interventions. These are difficult decisions, but they are of urgent importance so that KLM & KLM E&M are able to achieve operational and financial objectives in the coming years. To temporarily release qualified KLM E&M personnel for the KLM fleet, three proposed measures have been taken within Airframe:
1. Moving the 737 C-checks and out-phasing line The proposed decision is to transfer the B737 C-checks and out-phasing checks to KLM UK Engineering, a 100% subsidiary of KLM E&M, from 1 April 2024. This proposed decision will be submitted to the Works Council as soon as possible for advice. This work is currently being carried out in Hangar 14, which will result in overcapacity if it is executed in Hangar 14, providing a solution for the undercapacity in other Airframe units. 2. Outsourcing the A330 A-checks (under investigation) The intention is to outsource the A-check of the A330 on Fridays, freeing up further capacity. 3. Temporarily suspending the handling of most third parties at Line Maintenance International (LMI) From 1 April 2024, most external customer contracts of LMI in Amsterdam will be terminated, freeing up capacity. These colleagues will be temporarily loaned out and deployed elsewhere within Airframe where there is a shortage of personnel. The above proposed measures do not result in redundancy, and all positions will remain. From 2027/2028, there is an intention to phase in the A320 C-line at Schiphol. Additionally, there is an intention to resume work for third parties at LMI in three years, depending on the availability of personnel and the market. The relevant colleagues have been informed of these adjustments, but it will still have a significant impact on the teams and require flexibility from everyone. Careful efforts are being made to ensure a soft landing for colleagues who are loaned out or transferred. Furthermore, this situation also provides an opportunity to train the relevant colleagues for future aircraft types. Next steps In the short term, the proposed outsourcing decision will be submitted to the Works Council through an advice request. This applies to both the C-line and the outsourcing of the A330. In the coming weeks, implementation will be prepared. Team assignments will be made, schedules will be communicated, and introductions to the new unit will take place. Ready for the future In the coming years, the fleet renewal at KLM will accelerate. This is made possible, among other things, by phasing in two new Airbus types, which offers a bright future for a sustainable KLM fleet. Thanks to the temporary and structural changes currently being implemented in various places within Airframe, KLM is able to cope well with the changes in the fleet and move into the future in a healthy way.

KLM E&M is committed to inclusivity with multilingual communication
At KLM E&M we strive to be a diverse and inclusive employer. That is why we have decided to offer E&M-wide communication in both Dutch and English within KLM E&M from 1 February 2024.
In recent years we have welcomed a growing number of English-speaking employees within KLM E&M. In addition, it is expected that the number of non-Dutch speaking employees at KLM E&M will increase in the coming years. We think it is important that everyone feels at home with us and that there are no language barriers. By switching to both languages, we want to respond to this and ensure that our communication is understandable to everyone. What will change? From 1 February 2024, E&M communication will be offered in both languages via the channels below:
· E&M Scope
· E&M Special Scope
· KLM NewsApp > E&M News
· CleverDisplay > Corporate E&M news
Depending on the type of event, these will also be made available in English.
All other line communications within the Business Units will be offered unchanged in Dutch and where necessary in English. KLM NewsApp: language choice for English articles For those who prefer English, there is the option to adjust the language choice in the KLM NewsApp. English-language articles published in the 'E&M News' channel are then visible in your NewsApp. How do you adjust the language settings? Go to Settings > App language > Check English Don't have the KLM NewsApp yet? Schiphol Regulations applicable within Engineering Area
Our activities on the airport grounds take place within the Engineering Area, which is governed by the Schiphol Regulations. In practice, these regulations are not always complied with fully. Extra attention will be paid to compliance this year.
Below you will find an overview of the main points of Schiphol’s policy:
· Vehicles may only be parked at Schiphol-East (Engineering Area) for work-related purposes.
· Parking is only permitted within the designated parking spaces. Work may not be carried out on vehicles within this area. Offering, selling or making goods and services available for sale is prohibited (including the use of leaflets).
· Limited parking spaces are available for charging electric vehicles.
· Please ensure that you do not occupy these spaces for longer than permitted.
· If you forget your Schiphol Pass, you are not allowed to apply for a day pass to access the Engineering Area. It is your own responsibility to carry your Schiphol Pass on you.
· If you do not use your Schiphol Pass for three months, you will need to re-activate it. Please contact your Secretariat for this purpose.
· To extend your Schiphol Pass, contact your Secretariat. Your application requires you to be in possession of a “declaration of no objection” (Verklaring Geen Bezwaar – VGB), unless it’s for the grey Schiphol Pass.
· A minimum age of 15 applies to obtaining a Schiphol visitor’s pass.
· With a view to safety and preventing any operational disruptions, private visits are no longer allowed.
· Effective 1 January 2022, KLM E&M has been completely smoke-free. This means that all smoking areas have been closed since that date. Smoking is no longer permitted in KLM buildings and on KLM premises, both indoors and outdoors.

New central advice and reporting point for inappropriate behaviour
Do you feel left out at work? Does your team gossip a lot? Are you unhappy about how you are addressed by your colleagues? Do they make sexual remarks? Or does other behaviour go far beyond your boundaries? Don’t dwell on it. At KLM, you should know that support is available, such as a team of confidential advisors and, as of today, the central advice and reporting point for inappropriate behaviour.
We know that some colleagues can’t see the wood for the trees as to where to report such behaviour. In fact, there are different ways within divisions and departments to do so. We have listened to these colleagues and addressed this. That’s why we now have the central advice and reporting point for inappropriate behaviour.
Fewer reporting points for inappropriate behaviour Ultimately, the aim is to reduce the different ways to report such behaviour within our company. This will enable all reports to be recorded and acted upon in a more centralised manner. In the period ahead, we will update you regularly on our progress. In a subsequent article, we will introduce the team of confidential advisors to you.
The animation below explains the practicalities of the reporting process for inappropriate behaviour. If you’re curious to find out more, visit MyKLM. Meer weten? Ga dan naar MyKLM.
On behalf of the central advice and reporting point for inappropriate behaviour,

Implementation of Data Governance at KLM E&M
Utilising data properly provides greater insight, more opportunities for optimisation, better customer relations and smarter solutions. KLM E&M has been aware of the value of data for some time now. Drawing from data management theories and the Data Management Book of Knowledge (DMBOK) by the DAMA institute, KLM E&M has established its data governance framework.
Data governance is a central theme in data management. Two focal areas have been prioritised in relation to implementation: data governance driven by appointing data owners and data stewards, and by gaining insight into data quality.
Data object mapping Using data object mapping, KLM E&M’s most valuable data was identified together with employees. Existing data initiatives were also reviewed from a data governance perspective producing the “use cases”. Data ownership and data quality were examined in this context.
The KLM E&M data domains were also jointly identified and the first data owners appointed. Each data owner has a data steward, who helps to understand and enhance data quality within a particular data domain. With higher data quality, E&M processes can be improved and data teams can focus more on achieving optimisations.
A data governance team has been set up for Airframe, CS and ES, with a chairperson (the Data Transformation & Continuous Improvement (DTCI) leader) and data stewards. During monthly meetings, bottlenecks, points for extra attention and solutions are discussed. The domain data & AI officer participates and advises EMT on a regular basis.

Future-proof data Data governance is a relatively new topic. The challenge is to match the structure, prioritisation and extra time spent on data governance with high-priority topics. There’s also a cultural aspect: more integrated viewing of data, more proactive cleaning and more discipline to enter data accurately into systems. This is where we desperately need managers and system administrators.
Ultimately, the increasingly successful application of data governance will enable KLM E&M to make new and existing data-driven initiatives more efficient, valuable and future-proof, thus transforming KLM E&M into a data-driven organisation. What is our current position? Right now, we’re at the point of appointing data owners. This is the basis of data governance. It clarifies who’s responsible for what data.
With this responsibility comes:
· Ensuring top-quality data:
o Make sure the data is correct, current and relevant.
o Solve problems in relation to data quality, make corrections.
· Protecting the data:
o Determine who has access to the data and protect it from unauthorised access.
o Cooperate with the security teams to maintain data security.
· Complying with the applicable legislation and regulations:
o Ensure that data processing complies with the applicable legislation and regulations.
o Document data processing activities and prepare the organisation for audits.
Cooperation is essential
Data owners do not have to do this alone. Data stewards provide assistance, ensuring that the above is indeed carried out. In order for both the data owner and steward to develop in their positions, they can attend training. Working with the DT&CI leaders, data & AI officers apply a case-driven approach to help data owners and stewards fulfil their tasks.

Buy or sell days off with the Cafeteria Scheme
You can once again buy sell days off. If you would like to take advantage of this option, remember to take account of when you have to submit your application.
Selling You can sell days at two different points in 2024. For payout in April 2024, you can submit your application until 1 March 2024 at the latest. For payout in December 2024, by no later than 1 November 2024.
Check your days When selling days, be sure to first check how many days of non-statutory leave you still have. The current balance on your leave card is from 1 January 2024 and is therefore not up to date.
If you would like to check how many days off you have left, contact labour time management (LTM) by sending an email to arbeidstijdmanagement@klm.com, requesting the status of your non-statutory days off. This can be done between 15 and 29 February 2024. You will receive a reply as soon as possible stating the number of non-statutory days off you are allowed to sell.
NB: You not allowed to sell statutory leave days. These days are determined by law and are intended for leave.
Buying Buying days will be possible at three different points in 2024. For payout in April 2024, you can submit your request until 1 March 2024 at the latest. For payout in December 2024, by no later than 1 November 2024.
In the KLM Cafeteria Scheme brochure, you will see how many non-statutory days off you can buy under your collective labour agreement (see KLM Cafeteria Scheme brochure, Section 4.4). You may only buy days off if you have an insufficient leave balance. If you are a full-time employee and, as scheduled at 31 December of this year, you have less than 25 days of leave on your leave card, we refer to this as insufficient leave balance.
NB: When buying days, please note that the number of days you can buy depends on your gross monthly salary.
More information Check out the Cafeteria Scheme via MyKLM for more information about the different options.

New in E&M Scope: Q&A with the Executive Management Team (EMT)
During the E&M Information Sessions last June, we noticed that many colleagues had questions for E&M’s EMT, such as, “How are we going to train new people, what are we doing to promote the intake of new staff members and what are the biggest challenges facing us in the coming years”. We believe it’s important to maintain dialogue with all our E&M colleagues, so we’ve developed a new bi-monthly column: Q&A with the EMT.
Q&A with the EMT E&M colleagues can submit questions via the following form completely anonymously. Three questions will be selected from the submissions and answered by one of the EMT members. The kick-off will be performed by our EVP Ton Dortmans and who knows, perhaps he will answer your question.
Do you have a question for Ton? If so, submit it using the following form and who knows, perhaps your question will be answered.

Are KLM E&M employees allowed to smoke at Transavia?
On 1 November, KLM E&M introduced its stricter non-smoking policy, subject to enforcement by managers, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (KMar) & KLM AV. In recent months, we’ve seen a marked improvement with many colleagues now only smoking outside the Engineering Area instead of within it. What’s more, many colleagues are working on a plan to stop. We know how difficult it is, so congratulations to those colleagues who are working towards stopping.
Smoking at Transavia In recent weeks, a frequently asked question relates to the “Transavia smoking booth”. Are you allowed to smoke here as a KLM E&M colleague? The answer is that this is not allowed.
Additionally, as a KLM employee, you are thus employed by KLM and are therefore responsible for complying with the regulations and policies we have set as an organisation, which include no smoking in the Engineering Area. If you are caught smoking at Transavia, you will also be sanctioned. The no smoking policy will be enforced more intensively in the period ahead.
Do you need help to stop smoking? We all know it isn’t easy to quit smoking, which is why KLM offers its staff help. For example, there are free counselling programmes, individually or in a group. You can find more information about the support KLM offers via MyHealth. Or ask your manager for help.
If you see a colleague smoking where this isn’t allowed, remind them about KLM’s non-smoking policy. Together, we will make KLM E&M smoke free.

Phase-out of IMM/GAIN stock comes to an end
KLM E&M recently concluded its Gain/IMM phase-out project, which began on 19 June 2022 and ended on 1 December 2023. Boeing’s consignment stock construction ended on conclusion of the contract. A 30-strong project team joined Boeing to dismantle the contract.
KLM took over some of the stock – spread across Schiphol-Centre, Hangars 11 & 14 and Building 425. The remaining parts, in excess of 13,000 items, were removed from the racks and returned or scrapped. The efforts of many colleagues within the scope of this well-managed project resulted in a great end result.

In the Spotlight – E&M Fleet Chiefs
In this feature, a different E&M VP shines the spotlight on a colleague or team each month by paying an unexpected visit. This month, Jeroen Kok, Director Operations & Safety Standards puts our Fleet Chiefs in the spotlight.
Jeroen explains enthusiastically: over the past year, despite facing challenging operational issues, our Fleet Chiefs have always stepped forward to help, making a vital contribution to operations, while combining this with their ongoing day-to-day tasks. Especially at those times outside office hours when they could also be spending time with family or friends, they were and always are ready to support operations when needed.
The Fleet Chiefs serve as a link in the organisation, supporting other operational colleagues where necessary when things get especially challenging due to complex or lengthy AOGs or high downtime levels. By demonstrating ownership, stepping in when necessary and thinking in terms of options rather than limitations, Jørgen, Martijn and Gijs contribute greatly to E&M operations. At E&M, the three Fleet Chiefs in charge of the different KLM E&M aircraft types are Jørgen Hoogendoorn, Gijs de Rijk and Martijn Rozeboom.

Check in with… Rowena Hehanussa
Earlier in this edition of E&M Scope, you’ve read about the Implementation of Data Governance at KLM E&M. Since March 2022, Rowena Hehanussa has been working as a Domain Data & AI Officer at KLM E&M. We interviewed Rowena to find out more about her.
So tell us, who are you Rowena and what do you do at E&M?
“I am Rowena Hehanussa. I live with my two kids and husband around the corner from Schiphol-East in Hoofddorp. We love to travel and do so regularly, sometimes for an extended period. During our last trip, we spent six months travelling around Asia and Australia. This was an awesome experience for our family. I’ve been working at E&M as a Domain Data & AI Officer since March 2022. Before that I worked at KLM Commercial and Transavia.
In my current position, I’m responsible for rolling out the Data Governance Framework. This means that I try to establish a structure in which E&M’s data landscape is transparent, with clarity about who is responsible for what data while also raising data quality. The aim is to use data to optimise our work, improve processes, accelerate innovation and much more. It’s quite a challenge, and I’d like to invite everyone to think about how data could help them make their jobs easier, for example. I’m an enthusiastic person and I like to engage with people, especially if it relates to travel or data.”
Why KLM and not your own business?
“Before joining KLM and Transavia, I worked at different companies of different sizes, ranging from Telecom, online auction site, game development and fashion. When I finally joined Transavia, I felt comfortable. Air travel has always attracted me, as I used to want to be an Apache pilot and even began preparing to become a pilot. At Transavia, my two big interests for the airline industry and software development came together, and I got to do great projects. From Transavia I transferred to KLM; it took some time to get used to this, but I settled down eventually.
I became Product Owner of Aircraft Connectivity, through which I also came into contact with E&M. Now that I’ve been working at E&M for a while, a whole world is opening up to me again. That’s exactly what I love about KLM, it offers so many opportunities. With my eight years of experience, I’m still a ‘rookie’, but I understand that people work here for a long time. You can go in so many directions, it never gets boring.”
So what has brought you the biggest sense of pride at KLM recently?
“The thing I am most proud of is developing the aircraft connectivity hub in my previous position. Through the hub, we connected several connectivity suppliers and provided our customers with a single onboard portal, both for KLM and Air France. In my current capacity, I’m proud of fuelling enthusiasm around data that will enable me to take my next steps that I will be very proud of.”
What is your favourite KLM destination and why?
“Tokyo is my forever favourite and we have been there several times. The ultramodern alongside the traditional, quirky things like Pokémon manhole covers and station stamp collecting and the food make Tokyo, and the rest of Japan, amazing. A new favourite is Bangkok. The food, the people, the sights, the weather, we and the kids had a great time there.”
What destination tops your list still?
“Seoul still tops my list of places to go. Why... of course, food, food and food. And whatever else we see in between is a bonus.”
What is your motto in life?
“Keep it simple.”

TEAMING: Team Journey’s Engine Services
We could talk for hours about our plans and dreams for the future. Everyone is familiar with this: wanting to achieve or change something. But without goals, dreams remain elusive. By setting goals, we set course to success.
Goals provide direction for choices and concrete actions. By setting team goals, team members know where they stand and what they have to do. Only once it becomes clear where the team wants to go, can the team map out a way to get there. Concrete, measurable goals are key here.
Engine Services started working with the teams in 2023 to build their own Team Journey. Of the 47 teams, 41 have now established their annual plan. The remaining teams will start in Q1 of 2024.
Workshop aim The aim of the workshop is to chart the current team situation. In addition, they draft an annual plan consisting of meetings and activities related to their development as a team. In other words, the team really wants to complete and implement these topics in order to improve in terms of structure and culture. This process is ongoing and dynamic. It’s not just a one-off project, but a continuous process. It’s an investment in a shared future where they work to build a team culture focusing on ownership, flexibility and cooperation.
Team Engines continues to build together. Every goal they set and every milestone they pass brings them closer to achieving their vision of creating a “Great Place to Work”.
Here’s to a year of inspiration, growth and joint success!
