Hi colleagues,
We had a very successful MRO Americas 2024 in Chicago at the beginning of April. Over 100 customer meetings scheduled, including several contract signing ceremonies such as a 787 component for Hawaiian Airlines. There was also an AFKL E&M customer event with over 335 attendees and a successful LEAP customer conference. The event was attended by nearly 15,000 visitors, we welcomed more than 220 customers to our stand and our sales teams had 110 appointments with both current and prospective customers. All in all, a successful MRO event!
In addition, during the MRO Africa in Ethiopia last week, we also closed some great contracts, including a components 737 MAX contract with Air Tanzania, and a 5-year components contract with TAAG Angola Airlines for the B777, great news for KLM E&M.
Some great events also took place on our home ground. For instance, schoolgirls were introduced to technology during Girlsday, nine winners were awarded a Blue Heart during the presentation of the Blue Heart, and the Sourcing team has been busy behind the scenes filming a new Employer Branding Campaign called 'Techniek XXL' to put KLM E&M on the map as a technical employer. Read more about it in this E&M Scope.
Registration for the E&M Infosessions will start soon, which will take place at Hangar 14 from 3rd to 6th June. It promises to be a great programme focusing on our operation and employees, with room for fun activities and, of course, good food and drinks. So be sure to sign up!
In other news, our first-quarter results were published yesterday. The KLM Group posted first-quarter revenues of €2.7 billion against an operational loss of €290 million. Traditionally, the first quarter is low season for the airline industry. Costs are also rising. What’s more, fleet deployability was below par in January and February. Measures taken to resolve this resulted in an improvement in March. KLM also had to deal with particularly bad weather on several days in January and February, which meant we had to rebook customers on other flights.
KLM E&M results: Strong revenue growth, but normal and non-performance costs rising faster
In the first quarter of 2024, revenues, both internal KLM and from external customers including Air France, grew and exceeded the strong first quarter of (what later turned out to be the Corona) year 2020

KLM E&M's first-quarter 2024 result was still positive (€6 million), but a lot lower than the first 3 months of 2023 (€18 million).
The pressure on results is mainly caused by lagging results at Component Services. This was because costs rose significantly. On the one hand, we had significantly higher costs due to supply chain issues and lagging operational performance (component borrows, logistics, outsourcing and higher leasing costs of engines due to high TATs). On the other hand, the costs of our normal business operations increased at all E&M business units, for example due to increases in the collective labor agreement. Finally (not included in the KLM E&M result, but influenced by the E&M operation), costs for KLM for passenger compensation due to disruptions in the network operation are very high. Improvement plans are underway in all units, both for operations and finance, of which the first results are tentatively visible. This must continue in the coming period.
Besides results, cash is also important, because that is what we use to finance our investments. Despite the slightly positive result, KLM E&M's free cash flow was a substantial negative. This was partly due to lagging results, and partly due to further increasing and higher working capital (purchase additional stock, longer-term work in progress) to cope with supply chain problems, required production capacity and other disruptions. The negative cash flow therefore puts pressure on the scope for investments.
Last quarter we made great strides, but for now, further recovery of the supply chain, operational performance, and better control of our costs are top priorities to further improve KLM E&M's financial results.
Your commitment and contribution to KLM E&M's results in the past quarter are much appreciated, thank you for that!
As Michael Jordan once said:
“I had to get out there and go for it”
And that's exactly what we need to do as E&M'ers. Let's stay committed to KLM E&M and achieve much more together, WE ARE E&M!
Kind regards,

Young girls learn about engineering at KLM E&M during Girlsday 2024
On Thursday morning, 11th April 2024, Schiphol-East was buzzing with activity. As many as 32 girls aged 11 and 12, from Balans primary school in The Hague, came through the security gate. Why? Because KLM E&M took part in the national Girlsday, a day dedicated to introducing young girls to technology.
Our EVP Ton Dortmans warmly welcomed the girls and kicked off as quizmaster. Soon some good questions were asked, and a friendly, open, and engaged atmosphere was created. The girls were divided into three groups and were plunged into the world of E&M.
Colleagues Rob de Graaf and Nadav Wazana gave an engine-building workshop. Within a short time, the girls got to assemble a 3D printed model of an engine. To top it off, each class received an engraved frame with a luminous label. Colleague Johan van den Hoek gave an energetic tour of Hangaar 14. In no time, the safety vests had been made into crop tops.

In the Engine Shop, the girls could see the engines up close and were impressed by the large sums of money involved. Colleague Renald Slagman guided the girls for two rounds, after which he handed over to Renger Franke for the third, in this way everyone got to hear all about kevlar and composite blades.
Finally, everyone gathered in Building 411 for part 2 of the quiz, led by colleague Stefanie Boers. Everyone was awarded a goodie bag and, of course, a delicious Tony Chocolony bar.
All in all, it was a day full of inspiration, discovery and fun. KLM E&M showed these young girls that engineering can be a lot of fun and that there are great career opportunities in this sector. Who knows, maybe we will see these girls back at KLM E&M in the future!

Behind the scenes at KLM E&M: preparations for the introduction of the A321neo

KLM is about to introduce the new A321neo and that is no small feat! The various departments within KLM E&M have worked together intensively to make this a success and the introduction is progressing well. The first A321 is expected at Schiphol in August and preparations are now at an advanced stage.
Engineering, for example, has delivered the maintenance programme and all the necessary data has been entered into the IT systems. Task cards and packages have also been started by the PS&FC department. In addition, a lot of technical documentation is available digitally and sufficient employees have been trained. Various tools, equipment and parts have been ordered and, to a large extent, already delivered. Also, most IT systems have been made suitable for the arrival of the A321.
Although challenges remain, such as the PT (practical training) for some technicians, the CM&C4P project (in Maintenix and SAP) and the development of training by GK for Cabin Maintenance, E&M has already done a lot of work. For instance, Component Services and Engine Services have done a lot of work on introducing the A32N and possible customers for the type. Agreements have also been made with AirFrance on supplies at Schiphol and who will maintain which components. Engine Services is ready for LEAP engine maintenance and is about to sign its first LEAP engine maintenance contract for an external customer.
An interim result to be proud of
Last March, an internal audit was conducted to check E&M's readiness for the support for the Airbus A32N, with the conclusion: "KLM E&M is well prepared for the introduction of the Airbus A319/A320/A321 (CFM LEAP) base maintenance (up to C-check) capability." An interim result to be proud of and which has been achieved through the efforts of all colleagues involved. The final activities need to be completed. The application for the A32N EASA Part 145 approval has been submitted to ILT, which is necessary to be allowed to do Hangar Maintenance on the new type. E&M already has a Line Maintenance approval for the A32N and the application to ILT is for an extension of the approval to Base Maintenance.
Timing
The first A321 is expected at Schiphol in August, the second in September and two more in the final months of the year. In the coming years, six to nine aircraft per year will be delivered until all B737s are replaced.
In short, KLM E&M is busy preparing for the introduction of the A321 and it promises to be a beautiful, quiet, and reliable asset for our customers.

Hazardous Substances and Personal Protection Measures
In the coming period, we will be paying more attention to hazardous substances and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In our work at KLM E&M, we come across numerous hazardous substances that can be detrimental to our health or even deadly, either immediately or in the long term; unless you always use your PPEs properly. These include substances like Chromium-6, but also substances like organophosphates found in 'everyday' fluids like engine oil, hydraulic fluid (Skydrol), and paraffin. There are, of course, many other substances that require proper protection.
This is why it's good to always consult the the Workplace Instruction Card (WIK) for the latest information.
The use of PPEs is in the employee's interest, but that does mean that they are entitled to decide whether to use them or not. Where PPE is prescribed, its correct use, including proper storage, is not voluntary but mandatory. From a legal framework, it's also compulsory for managers to supervise the correct use of PPE within their teams and good 'occupational hygiene'. This includes, for instance, not eating on the work floor and cleaning up immediately after spills or leaks.
If you have any questions about (the use of) PPE or hazardous substances, contact your department's Occupational Safety Lead.

Update from the DD Sweep team
How will we monitor the DDs in the future?
The DD Sweep Team is one of the initiatives that are part of the Airframe Transformation. In the previous edition of the E&M Scope, we talked about the background of the DD Sweepteam. How does this translate into the future when the DD Sweep team have made Deferred Defects (DDs) manageable? We had a chat with colleagues Jan van Ooijen and Marc Kesting.
Where will DD monitoring be invested in the future?
Jan: "DD reduction will take place under my supervision until 1 June. From then on, DD management will be handled at the Maintenance Control Centre."
Who will be responsible for this?
Marc: "I'll be responsible for this as Unit Leader Maintenance Control. In the MCC organisation where the Technical specialists are now helping the DD Sweep team to enrich DDs, the daily monitoring will be picked up."
How will we monitor DDs and ensure quality?
Jan: "To track the development of the number of DDs, a dashboard has been created using a process model, see box. This will allow us to track the 'first time right' defect solution which will prevent DDs"

Marc: "After a DD arises (see 1.), 4 stages are completed:
1. Quality: this is where enrichment of the DD is done, in this stage we add any missing information. This is essential to be able to move to phase 2 and then 3.
2. Work preparation: this is where material preparation of the DD is done.
3. To be planned: planning of the DD in which all executable DDs can be scheduled.
4. Executing the DD: resulting in resolution of the DD
For each phase, we can see in the dashboard how many DDs there are, including when they were created. This allows us to track DDs that get 'stuck' in the pipeline and take them to the next phase. This way, there is attention to quality of DDs."

Working after the state pension age
In the collective labour agreement protocol 2023-2025, agreements have been made regarding the employment of employees after the state pension age in the position last held at KLM. This is entirely on a mutual voluntary basis and at KLM's initiative. The employee joins on the basis of a fixed-term contract of up to 4 years. However, years of service will continue to count towards IPB facilities and anniversaries. Given the current shortages, we are tremendously pleased with the agreements made.
Currently, we are working hard across KLM to set up a process and a proper registration system. The option to work beyond the state pension age will take effect no later than 1 September 2024.
Employees who reach the state pension age before 1 September 2024 and wish to continue working can notify their manager of their desire to continue working. Of course, the needs of the company management will be examined and an agreement will have to be given. If the conditions are met as included in the collective agreement protocol 2023-2025, the employee can send an email to HR E&M (email address: hrofficersem@klm.com) and the supervisor. HR E&M will then notify the employee and relevant manager once the process has been finalised.

Putting KLM E&M on the map as the technical employer
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we unfortunately had to say goodbye to more than 1,000 E&M employees. Experienced employees made room for young talent. Partly because of this, there were no forced redundancies. In addition, COVID-19 prevented us from hiring new recruits to train. Aviation's recovery has accelerated since 2023 and this combination of factors created a severe shortage of technical staff. Our efforts to recruit technical staff were not enough to fill this shortage of technicians, so we launched the Sourcing programme in early 2023.
Both at home and abroad, we are actively recruiting new technical staff and are working to put KLM E&M on the map as the Netherlands' proud number-one technical employer, a place where craftsmanship and innovation meet. This has allowed us to recruit another 425 colleagues in 2023 (350 of them external) and we would like to welcome even more tech colleagues.
Team Sourcing is dealing with the shortage of technical staff in the labour market. To address this problem, we are looking at staffing on different perspectives such as location, contract form, the present, and the future. We also focus on accelerating the entire recruitment process, from the search for suitable candidates to their onboarding. In doing so, we aim to make this process more responsive to the market and offer a better experience to new employees, so that ultimately, they stay with us.
To make this happen, we focus on four different key themes where a total of 14 tracks have been identified and are being monitored. We will come back to these 14 tracks regularly.

Facts & Figures 2023 & 2024

What’s next? This year, we continue to build the future of E&M. We are building on what we did last year but are now tackling it in a more substantial or frequent way. For example, we've again organised events like the KLM Skills Challenge, Girls Day and we will also be present at the Circuit van Zandvoort later on this year.
We also notice that there is still a lot of ignorance about what goes on behind our doors and this year we want to change that. In June, we are launching an employer campaign, Techniek XXL, in which we focus on craftsmanship and innovation. We'd like to show that these two elements go hand in hand and that working at KLM E&M is a remarkable experience. This year, we are also focusing more on external media attention. We did this last year, for instance, with the series Binnenkijken on AD.nl and Nu.nl, and this year with participation in the programme Filemon (Wesselink) schoolt om. When we recently took part in the Skills Challenge in March, NH Nieuws and RTL Nieuws also came to take a look behind the scenes.

And what can you do?
Referral recruitment
At KLM, we're always looking for new colleagues and you can help. One way to support us is by using referral recruitment. You can use your network and circle of acquaintances to find potential new colleagues and earn a referral bonus of €1,000 net. Last year, we were able to award 61 colleagues this bonus. In this way, we can search together and find suitable candidates faster. You'll soon be able to find more info and which vacancies participate in this bonus scheme on KLM's new career site.
E&M Ambassador
Another way to promote KLM E&M is by becoming an E&M Ambassador. This allows you to represent us at trade fairs, events, and open days. If you're interested in becoming an ambassador, please email coordinatie.ambassadeurs.en.events.em@klm.com.
Become a supervisor and/or take on interns
Finally, you can also mentor new colleagues and/or take on trainees within KLM E&M. This way, you can share your knowledge and experience and contribute to the development of the next generation.
In short, there are various ways in which you can contribute to KLM E&M's growth. Together, we will make sure we put E&M on the map as the technical employer, WE ARE E&M.

Successful start to the May holidays
After last weekend we have passed the peak of the May holidays. With a total of 179,300 locally departing and transferring passengers from Schiphol, these were very busy days. Many of us have worked hard to ensure that all flights depart on time. The staffing of Schiphol Security and the Royal Military Police was also in order so that we were able to fulfill the promise to our passengers.
Our planes were full. Not everything went smoothly yet, but fortunately we notice that the five must-win battles are paying off. The operation generally went well.
Working safely is and will always remain a priority. For each other and for our customers. Especially on days with large operational crowds. We can't say that often enough. Especially when you consider that last Sunday was 'International World Day for Safety and Health at work'.
Overall we can be satisfied with what we achieved together this weekend. Our completion factor was close to 100% on both ICA, EUR and KLC. We transported our passengers (with suitcases) safely to their destinations without major disruptions. I am proud of the good preparation and hard work of all colleagues.
This weekend was the baptism of fire for the busy summer we have ahead of us. We continue steadily with our must-win battles. In any case, the past few days have given us confidence that we will get through the summer well. We do that together. Each from his own work and task.
Big thanks for that!
On behalf of the Operations management team
Maarten Stienen

E&M and innovation

Innovation stories: Danny Lemmen
It is the people within KLM E&M who fuel every innovation, so getting to know them better is really enlightening. In today’s Innovation Stories we have the chance to meet Danny Lemmen, Repair Development Engineer at Engine Services! With a background in aviation engineering and technical management, Danny plays a crucial role in the collaboration between external parties (such as NLR and TU Delft) and KLM E&M, focusing on the inspection of turbine blades using cutting-edge technology like the laser line scanner.
The future of mechanical inspections starts in the present
One of Danny's primary responsibilities lies within Bright Sky Work Package 1, which delves into the future of repair. His role encompasses overseeing the 'inspectiestraat,' where he is introducing the usage of advanced tools such as laser scanners and 3D microscopes in the inspection process for engine parts. Danny's focus extends beyond the present, as he constantly explores the future of inspections, envisioning how the landscape might evolve by 2030. Collaborating with universities and research institutes, he evaluates the potential of laser scanning and 3D microscopy, identifying their added value for E&M operations. Although legal restrictions can slow things down, Danny works for a future where these technologies could improve aviation maintenance and will even be able to provide additional information to KLM E&M to carry out maintenance in a smarter way. Automation is a key part of Danny's job, as he seeks to simplify repetitive tasks with technological solutions. By programming inspections to occur automatically, he aims to reduce labor-intensive processes, all while optimizing the interaction between humans and machines. This approach not only improves efficiency but also lays the groundwork for the smooth integration of emerging technologies into our operations. With this, the knowledge of the employee remains essential, but Danny hopes to reduce the labor intensive, repetitive and time-consuming tasks.
Danny’s driving force
What drives Danny's passion is the combination of innovation and current needs. He enjoys exploring new avenues to support current operations while envisioning future possibilities. Whether it's consulting with manufacturers to discuss the repair manuals or pleading for legal changes, Danny is committed to pushing boundaries and overcoming challenges. As he mentions: “We can look forward to 2030 and future possibilities, but there are also current issues that we need to address.”
Future goals
Looking ahead, Danny's ambitions align closely with the overarching goals of BrightSky. He envisions a future where machine interactions are optimized, and inspections go beyond regular processes. Danny aims to contribute to redefining the structure of aviation operations ensuring they are tailored to meet the evolving needs of the industry. For instance, while current systems categorize components just as “Serviceable, repairable, or scrap”, he aspires to use the available data and technology to develop more customized approaches.
Stay tuned for more everyday innovative stories from KLM E&M!
General information BrightSky
Are you familiar with BrightSky? For those who aren't: BrightSky Mobility Fund is an ecosystem consisting of 12 partners in the aviation industry, various educational institutions, leading knowledge institutes and start-ups/scale-ups. The aim of this ecosystem is to make the aviation sector at Schiphol more sustainable towards 2030.
BrightSky Work Packages
BrightSky consists of 5 projects, also known as work packages. KLM takes the lead for 3 work packages. These are: Smart MRO, Smart availability and Smart training.
Smart MRO, work package 1, focuses on new knowledge and skills in the field of innovative inspection methods and repairs for aircraft and aircraft engines.
Smart availability, work package 2, focuses on the development of digital tools that support decisions about maintenance and planning.
Smart training, work package 5, develops a digital cockpit simulator for aircraft maintenance tasks. In the other two work packages, in which KLM is not involved, they are working on innovations regarding the digitization of baggage handling and security.
E&M and innovation
Innovation Team Day: working together on the future
The innovation ecosystem consists of different innovation teams, in this case KLM E&M. This is part of the wider KLM innovation ecosystem. These teams come together and add their value to the innovation projects. As innovation is often cross-departmental, it’s important that the different areas of expertise join forces.
On 22nd April, the Innovation Team Day took place. On this day, a large group of innovators from KLM E&M came together to inspire each other, share knowledge, and learn from each other. The day started with an introduction of all the new faces as the ecosystem had grown by over 30 new members.
Next, our EVP Ton Dortmans was interviewed about innovation. Among other things, he was asked about his vision on innovation, the view to the future, and where he gets inspiration. There were many questions from the audience, who were very interested in E&M's innovative future.

Then it was time for an inspiring presentation by our colleagues from E&M, Ground Services, and Cargo on the major Autonomous Operations innovation programme. Mathieu Essenberg, SVP Hub Operations, kicked off the presentation. The three unveiled their first tangible projects within the Autonomous Operations programme where they are working closely together. Cargo presented an advanced exoskeleton where employees receive assistance in lifting Cargo. This pilot went live in November 2023, now Cargo is looking further to set up an experiment with a robotic arm that unloads pallets. E&M introduced a demo of a speech-to-text tool for mechanics in the Hydraulics Shop, the robot takes the (dull) administrative work out of their hands and leaves more time for tinkering with components. Ground Services demonstrated an innovative robot that autonomously places wheel blocks under the aircraft after arriving at the gate, which removes our employees from the unhealthy working environment under the wing.

After a short break, it was up to the innovators to apply their skills in the innovation game. Participants were divided into different teams who together discovered a problem or opportunity and developed it. In the game, they walked through the innovation process, from idea to implementation. The teams set to work enthusiastically to shape their innovative ideas. At the end, the winning team was announced and received the innovation award. We ended the day with lunch and some networking time with each other.
There is huge interest in the innovation programmes at play within E&M. In short, the Team Day was considered hugely inspiring, and we are looking forward to the next one.

Behind the scenes at Techniek XXL
A fortnight ago, we did our very best to make our organisation shine. On Monday 15th April and Tuesday 16th April, we were busy from early in the morning until late at night to deliver the perfect look for our extraordinary technical workplace.
On Monday, we started making YouTube tutorials in various shops, including Avionics and Hydraulics at Component Services, and the engine shop at Engine Services. We also took an incredible number of photos at various locations on the day. A special thanks to all E&M colleagues who were willing to stand in front of the camera and show what impressive technical things you can do at E&M.
On Tuesday, it was finally time for the big shoot! We shot two scenes here. The day before, the production teams worked all day to get the two sets ready: a shed where the actor is fixing his lawnmower and a music studio where the actress is fixing her guitar. Then the wall breaks for both of them, and they walk into the giant Hangar in astonishment.
We would like to thank everyone who helped, both behind the scenes and all colleagues who were willing to stand in front of the camera or participate as extras. Both days were a great success and we're looking forward to presenting the final product to everyone and, of course, welcoming new colleagues! Fun news: during the E&M Information Sessions we will show the first version of the video.

Component Services delivers the A350 component
Good news: Shop Electrics recently delivered its first A350 component. The component in question was a steam oven being replaced on the F-HTYB. Arriving by shuttle from Paris, colleagues from Logistics delivered the oven to Building 425. The Shop process was supported by our colleagues from, among others, Direct Support, Commercial Operations, DIS, and IT. It was a real team effort and the component was sent back to Paris repaired a fortnight ago.
Of course, this milestone was celebrated with cake, and in the photo, our colleagues wave off the component for its next step with their colleagues in Paris. It was a special achievement that we can all be proud of.
This is just the beginning, as a second A350 steam oven was recently received in the shop. As you know, Air France is responsible for the pool of A350 components and we're pleased to report that we are repairing more and more components for the A350. Besides the steam ovens, we are also working on industrializing the water heaters, the Variable Frequency Generator and the A350 toilet assys in Amsterdam.
We look forward to what the future will bring for Component Services!

Check in with… Michael Bonnema in Lima
Line Maintenance International is responsible for aircraft maintenance at some 50 KLM outstations and for 150 other partners and customers around the world. This time we had the opportunity to interview colleague Michael Bonnema, who is Maintenance Manager at the outstation in Lima, Peru. Michael is 57 and has worked at KLM since 1989. Since 2012, he has been working as a AMT in Lima.
How do you like it in Lima?
"I really enjoy living in Lima at the moment. I've always been interested in other cultures and am happy to have been given this opportunity. The team I currently work in consists of 6 people, including 4 AMTs and 2 mechanics. We have a good time and run the station well. They speak Spanish here so you can't use the jokes you have in your own language; you have to have a reasonable grasp of their language."
Are there any major challenges at play at the moment?
"A new airport is being built on the other side of the airport. We're currently still at an old airport shared with the air force, police, and naval aviation service. The new airport is due to be completed by the end of 2024/25, so we have to make sure we're ready and that operations continue as usual when we have to move."
What does an average day look like for you?
"My day starts at 5.30am, when I wake up my daughter for breakfast. After she's gone to school, I open my laptop to check my emails. When I get to the airport, I start with a cup of coffee and have a chat with my colleagues. Then we prepare for the incoming planes."
Do you ever come back to the Netherlands?
"I don't come back to the Netherlands very often, usually once a year for holidays. With my new position, I may have to go to Amsterdam again this year. In Lima itself, I enjoy sitting on the beach and visiting friends and acquaintances. Unfortunately, cycling and motorcycling are not recommended here as it can be very dangerous."
What is a KLM destination you would like to go to?
On my wish list is Washington DC. Together with my daughter, I've been there briefly before, but I would like to go back again to get to know and explore the city better. Hopefully, we'll manage to make the trip this year. All in all, I find it very enriching to live and work here in Lima."
