Dear colleagues,
Yesterday, Tuesday 27 August 2024, KLM took delivery of the first Airbus A321neo, PH-AXA, KL 9868, from Hamburg. Together with our CEO Marjan Rintel, I had the honour of taking the first flight from Hamburg to Amsterdam, I am proud that we as KLM are able to take this important step towards the future.
KLM proudly welcomed its first Airbus A321neo at Schiphol-East after a festive reception on the runway. Over 400 guests attended the event, including 105 colleagues from across the organization, in celebration of KLM's upcoming 105th anniversary on 7 October. In Hangar 12, this first A321neo was officially added to our KLM fleet—a milestone we've eagerly anticipated. The door of the aircraft opened to loud applause from the guests present and Marjan Rintel, CEO of KLM, took the floor. Minister Barry Madlener of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management also addressed the audience. He emphasized the importance of Dutch aviation and the role of KLM in it.
The arrival of the Airbus A321neo marks a significant step forward for KLM as we continue to renew our fleet. This beautiful new aircraft is key to our mission of flying cleaner, quieter, and more economical flights while ensuring our customers enjoy the highest level of comfort on board.
After more than two years of intensive preparation, the time has finally come to reflect on this special milestone. The introduction of the new aircraft types is an extensive process in which numerous colleagues have played a crucial role. Our teams within KLM E&M have also made an essential contribution to this. For us, the addition of this new sixth aircraft type represents an increase in complexity, but also an opportunity to provide high-quality and innovative employment across all our E&M units.
"I have no secret to success. Just do your best, like something and gather good people around you. Because alone you can't do anything. Together you can do everything." - Johan Cruijf
In March 2022, the E&M A320/21 intro team, in which all E&M units are represented, was launched This team aims to make the necessary preparations for the timely, safe, sustainable and profitable operation of the new aircraft.
An incredible amount of work has been done by the team members and many other E&M colleagues. Thanks to their efforts, we're ready to support KLM in the operation of the A320/21neo. The E&M A320/21 intro team will remain active for the next three months to support the start-up of the A321 operation where necessary.
Once again, many thanks to all colleagues who contributed to the introduction of the neo. Let's celebrate this achievement together and prepare for the next steps.
Kind Regards,

Introduction of the A320/A321neo Meet the team
Gijs de Rijk - Fleet Chief A320/A321neo
Introducing a completely new type of aircraft within the KLM fleet is not a daily activity at KLM E&M, so for all colleagues within the various business units the introduction is a challenge. With the arrival of the PH-AXA on 27 August, it will be important from day 1 to introduce this new type of aircraft integrally and correctly within KLM E&M.
Gijs de Rijk, Fleet Chief A320/21neo plays a significant role in this, where he, together with Engine Services, Component Services, Engineering, and Airframe, will focus on ensuring high fleet reliability at the lowest possible maintenance costs. For operator KLM in particular, Gray's focus will be on the triangular relationship ‘Fleet Availability’, ‘Fleet Health’, and ‘Total Maintenance Costs’.
During the KLM E&M Entry into Service (EIS) team ‘project’ phase, it was particularly important to get a good picture of this new type of aircraft. In addition, in the coming period Gijs will immerse himself in all the technology concealed in this new aircraft by following a complete B1/B2 training course.
"With this substantive knowledge I can play my part during the introduction and phase-in of the A320/21neo at KLM E&M."

Jeroen Lodewijks - Project Manager A321/A320 Intro
To start with a cliché ‘an awful lot of hard work went into bringing the A32N into E&M. It has become a totally different introduction than we expected. Airbus treats us differently as customers than we are used to from other manufacturers.
In the beginning of the introduction project, it was a bit of a puzzle. We had to deal with delivery delays and an enormously complicated change to IT. Stocking parts and equipment on time was also a challenge. But in the end, we as KLM E&M have everything we need to make the Entry into Service a success.
When I look back at the flexibility and cooperation with all colleagues involved, that is where the greatest success lies. We're not there yet, on 16th September the first commercial flight will take place. Until then, we still have to go through some hoops such as In-Flight training and Circuit flying with the A32N Cockpit Crew.
"I would like to thank everyone who has helped to land the A32N successfully within E&M!"
Bart Bouwman - Project Manager A32N Entry into Service Component Services
For Component Services, the A321/A320 neo is not entirely new anymore. CS has had the privilege of acting as supplier for Transavia as well. Everyone knows by now that KLM, together with Transavia and Transavia France, chose the Airbus A321/A320 NEO for fleet renewal. In addition, the three operators joined forces to work out the fleet specification.
This initiative was then continued for component availability and maintenance; the three operators also jointly chose to place this with AFI Material Services as well as KLM Component Services. In doing so, CS was able to benefit from the years of experience the AFI MS colleagues had already built up and their large existing pool. But MS could also learn from CS, because for the first time CS will no longer manage the A32N components in CROCOS, but in SAP P51; the system in which in the future all other KLM E&M and Air France Industries aircraft types will be included.
Throughout the EIS process, it was great to notice that all parties were focused on the group interest. A great example is the joint Main Base Kit, ‘MBK’ being the package of components needed to support the aircraft's operation at homebase. Part of this is now in the large warehouse in H14, and the other part is at Schiphol-Centre in the KLM warehouse near gate F6. From both warehouses, CS can now quickly deliver these components to Transavia or KLM AMT's.
"At CS, we have since experienced that Transavia's A32Ns is a reliable aircraft type, so that bodes well for the future!"
