Smoke-free policy at Schiphol-East

Dear Colleagues,

A statutory smoking ban has been in effect governing all work-related areas and buildings at Schiphol-East since 1 January 2022. Because KLM – and therefore E&M – attaches great importance as an employer to the health of its workforce, this ban has also been extended to the outdoor areas within Schiphol-East’s engineering area.

Unfortunately, we can see that far too many colleagues are still smoking on KLM’s premises.

With effect from 1 November 2023, compliance with KLM’s smoke-free policy will therefore be enforced, in the first place by managers. What’s more, compliance will also be monitored through random checks carried out by the Royal Marechaussee (KMAR) and AV. If you are caught smoking in an area where this is forbidden, penalties will be imposed. This could include written warnings and disciplinary measures in line with KLM’s penalty policy. It should be noted that the ban also includes e‑cigarettes.

It’s a pity to have to monitor compliance in this manner, but practice shows that counting on the individual’s sense of responsibility does not appear to be sufficient.

Help via MyHealth We all know that it’s not easy to stop smoking, which is why KLM offers support. Take our free counselling programmes, for example, offered individually or in groups. You will find more information about how KLM can provide support via MyHealth. Or ask your manager for help.

If you see a colleague smoking where this is not allowed, please remind them about our smoke-free policy.

Together we can make KLM E&M smoke-free.

Kind regards,
