Dear colleagues, KLM E&M has been in the spotlight at various events and social media channels in recent weeks.
We organised the 787 Operator Experience Conference (read more below), we were present at Zandvoort Circuit during the Historic Grand Prix (more on this in this E&M Scope), we went live with our new Employer Branding campaign 'Techniek XXL' via various social media channels, and the episode of “Omscholen met Filemon” at KLM E&M went live on YouTube. A great series of events, contributing positively to KLM E&M's public image. During the E&M Infosessions, we emphasised the importance of the health and vitality of our employees at KLM E&M. Our goal is to ensure you can perform at your best and enjoy your work, with good health being essential for this. That's why we offer free recreational fitness for E&M employees. You can read more later in the E&M Scope. Maarten Stienen, COO, also pointed out in his operational update that a lot of work has been done in recent months to get our grip on the operation back. The operation faced challenges in January and February, prompting us to launch the five 'must-win battles'. These initiatives are already showing positive results within E&M. We are experiencing fewer cancellations, happier customers, and greater stability. Clearly, the strategy is working.
Through our combined efforts, we've headed into the summer with fewer DDs. We are diligently working on various improvement programs within the Business Units and continue to press OEMs to deliver sufficient materials. Good planning is essential to our success. Together, we’ll ensure that the summer remains manageable and that no problems arise from understaffing. Before I start enjoying a summer break myself, on behalf of the Executive Management Team (EMT) of E&M, I’d like to wish all E&M colleagues going on holiday a happy and enjoyable break! For those continuing to work during this period, thank you. Take care of yourselves, work safely, and be careful!
Kind regards,

8th edition of the 787 Operator Experience Conference
The eighth edition of the AF/KL E&M 787 Operator Experience Conference (OEC) took place in Bangkok on 17th and 18th June. This 787 Operator Conference was organized by our own E&M colleague Jørgen Hoogendoorn, 787 Fleet Chief. After previous editions in Amsterdam (2016/2023), London (2017), Singapore (2018) and online, the event returned to the Thai capital for the first time since 2019.
The two-day conference, organised by KLM E&M, brings together Component Services' global 787 customers to share their technical and operational knowledge and experiences on the Boeing 787. In addition, it is a fantastic way to showcase E&M's expertise and strengthen existing customer relationships.
The cooperation of different operators within this '787 Community' aims to achieve higher reliability of the 787, reduce operational and maintenance costs, and form 'One Voice' towards Boeing and Collins. This knowledge exchange is crucial because of the daily technical and operational challenges KLM and the other operators face with this aircraft type.
Three new Community members welcomed!
During this edition we were pleased to welcome no less than three new 787 operators who became Component Services customers in the past year: Air Canada, Air Europa, and Hawaiian Airlines. The expertise of these airlines already proved a valuable addition to the event and the 787 Community. During the conference, they also had the opportunity to present themselves to the other participating operators.

Variety of topics
This edition of the 787 OEC again included a variety of presentations, followed by content-based discussions led by Ton Dortmans, Benoît Rollier and Dominik Wiener-Silva. Key topics from Engineering were explained by André Kuiper, Lead Fleet Engineer 787. Among other things, he shared the challenges with the thrust reverser and heat damage in the Inlet Cowl. His colleague, Max Niessen, System Engineer 787, explained, among other things, the drainhole modification of the Economy Cooling Valve, a modification that can greatly reduce the number of Cabin Air Compressor changes. A product update on the GEnx came from Rory Hansen (Program Manager GEnx), who called in early via video from the Netherlands. Jan-Kees van Gent, Supply Chain Lead, then addressed the challenges within the global supply chain and the recently opened CS warehouses in Los Angeles and Singapore. Mark Dekker, Program Manager 787 Components, presented the problems with the 787's top 15 worst-performing components, information that was an ideal prelude to the discussion with Collins Aerospace on Day 2. Collins spoke at E&M's invitation about modifications to various 787 systems to increase performance and reduce maintenance costs. The operators present provided a lively discussion with critical questions and comments.
Besides focusing on the current performance of 787, Casper van Diën and Giel Klijweg from E&M Big Data team shared innovative developments within the 787 product, such as Prognos for CAC and Skythread Blockchain. This showed customers that E&M is not only looking to improve the current performance of the aircraft, but also looking ahead to the maintenance of the future.Besides focusing on the current performance of 787, Casper van Diën and Giel Klijweg from E&M Big Data team shared innovative developments within the 787 product, such as Prognos for CAC and Skythread Blockchain. Finally, Juneyao Airlines shared their component support and technical experiences from the past year. They emphasized the value of the 787 community, noting that they received AOG support up to 20 times from other operators within this network. It’s encouraging to see operators collaborating outside the conference, sharing components and technical knowledge with each other.
The taste of Bangkok
Besides presentations, there were also informal discussions during the evening programme. There was also time to sample the atmosphere of Bangkok during a boat tour of the Chao Phraya River, followed by snacks and drinks to end the evening.
These were two valuable and inspiring days, during which a great deal of knowledge and insights about the 787 were shared. Despite the challenges with the 787 in the years to come, one message was very clear: 'We believe in the 787!'

KLM Connect replaces EPS survey
Until recently every KLM employee received the EPS survey once every three months asking 'To what extent do you recommend KLM as an employer'. This survey was replaced by KLM Connect on 11th June.
KLM Connect
The new survey is called KLM Connect and is an extension and replacement of the current EPS survey. What the KLM Connect survey wants to know is 'how are you doing, and do you feel that you're being listened to?'
The new questions will create a better picture of these aspects and provide more insight into KLM employee engagement. For this purpose, we will be using the Engagement Index. which we introduced in the KLM Employee Survey 2023. The EPS question remains important and remains one of the four questions that make up the Engagement Index.
The design of this new questionnaire also allows for better monitoring of progress on the priorities which have been made based on the feedback you have provided in the KLM Employee Survey and through other channels.
Finally, KLM Connect will also measure the extent to which you feel that something is done with your feedback. This is important because colleagues indicate that they feel nothing is done with the feedback they provide in surveys. With this new survey, we'll get a good picture of where and to what extent this is this is being felt.
Frequency
KLM Connect is sent every week to an automatically selected group of employees, this is done in such a way that every KLM employee will receive the survey twice a year.
Results
Would you like to know the results of E&M's survey, or what initiatives are being taken to improve your work experience? If so, please contact our Engagement Lead, Carmen Trilokie (carmen.trilokie@klm.com).

Update Airframe Improvement Plan
We are working hard on the Airframe Improvement Plan. In the past few weeks, we have focused on implementing various initiatives. We have started several pilots, including manned material issuance in H11. We have achieved great success in reducing the number of DDs. DD Reduction With a count of 586 DDs, on July 4th, for the first time since the start of the DD reduction initiative in February, we have come below 600 DDs! This is a great result that many colleagues within Airframe have been involved in, and we can all be proud of. We have achieved this by working together intensively and with focus, and by taking pragmatic and structural measures. The essence of this approach is to act quickly and remove obstacles to resolve DDs. The mountain of DDs has been made manageable by dividing them into four phases, which we now call the DD pipeline: DD enrichment, DD material provision, DD planning, and DD solution. Daily monitoring is done to keep the lead time of the DDs per phase, and therefore for the entire pipeline, as short as possible. We want to thank everyone who has contributed to this effort. Now, our goal is to keep the average number of DDs below 600, while continuing to strive for further reduction of the DD count. Manned Material Issuance Pilot On Thursday, June 27th, we conducted a pilot for material issuance in H11. GWKs and mechanics working on the A08 check on the PH-BQE collected all the materials, including 100%, DD, and unplanned, from a manned material issuance point in the bay. Warehouse employees issued the materials based on task cards. This approach reduces search time and makes it clear when and to whom materials have been issued. Valuable feedback was received during the pilot. Material Status In addition to manned material issuance, we also tested the display of statuses for ordered materials. Material orders were displayed on various screens and iPads. The status of these orders changed to "available" once the materials were ready to be collected. This display makes our material process more efficient and transparent. It has fostered good collaboration between MEF employees and colleagues from production. Next Steps "The pilot was very valuable. We worked with various colleagues and collected a lot of input. Now, we are looking for ways to further improve the material issuance process. Our goal is to gain more insight into the status of materials and reduce search time, so that more time can be spent on actual maintenance work," said Hans Prins, initiative owner of material issuance. We will continue testing improvements related to our material issuance. The next pilot is scheduled for Thursday, July 11th. If you are interested in or have questions about the Airframe Improvement Plan, please email hans.luijendijk@klm.com.

In Style We Work: new assortment of safety shoes!
From 1st July 2024, the updated range of KLM safety shoes is available through Schijvens. Safety, especially in operations, is our number one priority so most importantly, the shoes meet the required safety requirements. But let's be honest, shoes also have to be comfortable and look good. That's why, the new models have been extensively tested by colleagues, they look a lot more modern and there are more to choose from.

What's changed:
- The range has been expanded with trendier, more modern 'sneaker-like' models that look great
- The range consists of 34 types of safety shoes
- All shoes meet current safety requirements, and all shoes are certified
- The new models have been tested by a large group of colleagues
- Everyone entitled to safety shoes will receive two pairs of KLM safety shoes from the selection linked to your job/clothing package
- Reissue: you can reorder two pairs of KLM safety shoes annually, regardless of the number of hours you work
- You can also order several pairs of work socks with your safety shoes each year, these are provided to you as standard when commencing employment
Why is wearing KLM safety shoes important?
To minimise the risk of injury while working, it's important that you wear safety shoes from the KLM range. When compiling this range, the different work locations and the risks involved in performing your job have been taken into account. The safety shoes provided by KLM meet safety standards and are tested and certified. During your work, you are required to wear safety shoes that meet the safety requirements and certification set within your department.
Who are the KLM safety shoes for?
The KLM safety shoes are for colleagues working in the operational departments of Ground Services, Engineering & Maintenance, and Cargo. Whether you qualify for the KLM safety shoes depends on your position and is linked to your clothing package.
Exceptions: Colleagues who are not directly required to wear safety shoes while performing their own job, but who come to locations where safety shoes are required for other reasons, can receive KLM safety shoes. However, this needs to be requested separately. In such cases, these colleagues will receive one pair of safety shoes.
More information and ordering
On MyKLM you can read how to order shoes from the updated range. Here you will also find our Q&A and more information about the help our podiatrist can offer in choosing the right shoes for your foot.

KLM Engineering & Maintenance at Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort 2024
The weekend of 21-22-23 June saw KLM Engineering & Maintenance (E&M) proudly in attendance as a partner at the Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort 2024. With two impressive aircraft engines, we demonstrated the fascinating parallels between motorsport and aviation engineering, with safety, precision, and teamwork at the heart of the event.
When you think of KLM you think of flying and holidays, and when you think of working at KLM you think of pilots and stewardesses, not maintenance staff. We'd like to change that because we could use some new recruits. That's why we were at Zandvoort during the Historic Grand Prix, to raise awareness of exactly what we do within E&M.
Racing attracts many people who are interested in engineering and like to take a look underneath the hood. We were on the circuit with a stand featuring 2 aircraft engines and our
team of E&M ambassadors and recruiters spoke enthusiastically about their work and the career opportunities at KLM E&M. All in all, an inspiring experience for future mechanics and engineers.

E&M and innovation

Innovation stories: Linda Bos
Wondering how technology and creativity can be combined to redefine the workplace? In today's Innovation Stories, Linda Bos, Director of Technology Hub E&M, shares her insights on innovation and its transformative impact.
Technology Hub E&M The role of the Technology Hub E&M is to shape a Horizon 2 innovation strategy, lead it to executable plans and ultimately to operational realities. The focus is on Horizon 2 innovation, with current tasks being carried out differently. This is in contrast to Horizon 1, which is about improving current practices.
The aim is to integrate new technologies in the workplace, easing heavy physical or mental labour. By automating repetitive and less interesting tasks, people can focus on more challenging and enjoyable work.
This human-centred approach aims to align innovation with people's needs and improve the overall working environment. Current focus areas
KLM's Autonomous Operations Programme, or 'Innovation in Operations', is central to this. This initiative, in collaboration with Cargo and Ground Services, explores concepts and roadmaps for future technological advances. Concept cars, for example, are used to visualise possible future scenarios. Questions such as "What if we could inspect an aircraft without opening it?" are explored, considering possibilities such as enhanced goggles or autonomous robots for cabin inspections. This work focuses heavily on hardware solutions such as robots, mini-drones and other innovative tools. Data is crucial for these advances, as it allows robots and AI systems to be set up correctly. An ongoing experiment involves speech-to-text technology, which supports operations in automating administrative tasks. This pilot aims to eliminate mundane tasks, putting the focus on more stimulating work.
Linda, together with a team, also leads the BrightSky ecosystem. This initiative includes several pathways, developed with 12 partners. Its projects force E&M to look ahead and plan for future innovations, especially those at lower Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) where new ideas are still being developed. The aim is to bridge the gap between vague innovations, or basic research, and practical applications in the workplace. For example, using technologies such as blockchain to improve supply chain management. Moreover, collaboration is vital and partnerships with different industry players are strengthened. These include working with ROCs on training, collaborating with universities and colleges, and working with government agencies and knowledge institutions such as the Ministry of Defence and NLR. The aim is to align education with industry needs and address the gap between academic curricula and real-world applications. This long-term focus ensures that future workforce skills are aligned with operational requirements. Innovation is seen as a collaborative effort, requiring connections between people, companies, and the rest of the world. Keeping abreast of the latest developments is crucial, and this is achieved through the ecosystem approach. The emphasis is on working together, both inside and outside the organisation, to drive transformation.
Achievements and ambitions
The Hyperion project, a collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, stands out as a major achievement. This collaboration has put E&M at the forefront of aviation maintenance standards, benefiting the entire Dutch aviation sector. Another highlight is the success of speech-to-text in autonomous operations, where different business units are showing their interest (such as component repair, EPCOR) to find applications in knowledge capture and knowledge transfer. BrightSky tracks are also very well represented at events such as the Innovation Fair.
Goals for the future
Linda envisions creating an inspiring collaboration space within E&M. This space would bring together different ecosystems, such as the Ground and Cargo ecosystems within the Autonomous Operations programme, external partners such as Jet Support, Schiphol, certifying and knowledge institutions, education, and ministries. It would be a place to experience and experiment with innovations, involving students, teachers, and professionals from different sectors. The aim is to foster a knowledge-sharing environment where different parties can contribute and benefit from collective efforts.

TEAMING: team budget from IMO
Teams within KLM E&M have been given the chance to improve their working environment with the help of a €5,000 budget. So, what happens with this budget? Have a look at the Information Management Office (IMO) to see what they did with their budget.
The Information Management Office (IMO) used part of the team budget to give their meeting rooms a fresh and inspiring look and decorate them in the theme of the room's name. With these decorations, they hope to improve not only the visual appeal of the meeting rooms, but also the atmosphere during meetings.
The rooms bear the names of old computer games and wall coverings of the game have been installed in certain rooms. Besides being incredibly cool, those wall coverings also have a sound-absorbing function, making the adjacent rooms much quieter during meetings.
In Tetris, they had magnetic stickers made which they can actually move around to physically play the game. They also had the facility doors covered to further accentuate the 'nice workspace' feeling.
Our IMO colleagues are really excited about the spaces and doors and will soon start working on other team spaces creating beautiful areas that will enhance team spirit and job satisfaction.
How did you spend the team budget?
Also proud of what your team did with the budget and happy to share it with other colleagues? Let us know via communicatie.EM@klm.com and who knows, maybe your department will be in the next E&M Scope.

KLM E&M LMI event: een inspirerend en verbindend succes!
Line Maintenance International (LMI) organised a very sucessful first Maintenance Manager Leadership event from 3rd to 6th June.
During these days, all global Maintenance Managers from our outstations were invited to participate in an inspiring and informative three-day programme. The event started on Monday morning with essential EASA Compliance training. Monday afternoon was spent at the E&M employees info session.
After this inspiring start, the event moved to the beautiful city of The Hague for the following days. On Tuesday morning, LMI colleagues were warmly welcomed by the Mayor of The Hague, Mr Van Zanen. The Hague has special significance for KLM, as this was the home city of our founder, Albert Plesman and our former head office was located here.
The day continued with an invigorating yoga session provided by Jeyakumar Venkatasamy, our very own Maintenance Manager from Chennai. This was followed by several inspiring presentations on LMI strategy, Safety & Compliance, and Human Resources, with contributions from guest speakers from the management of Turkish Airlines, Cargolux, and Emirates as the 'voice of the customer'.
Our colleague Sijbrand Veenstra also provided participants with an update on the latest developments in Airframe Safety and Compliance.
After a day full of exchanging valuable knowledge, it was time for a refreshing walk through the centre of The Hague. This offered the Maintenance Managers the chance to learn more about the city's rich history.
On Wednesday, the programme focused on Area presentations, leadership, Finance, KLM operations, and Quality & Safety. Once again, participants were treated to inspiring presentations by Jeroen Kok (E&M Operations), Yoy de Haan (Finance), and Ben Gooijer and Maurice Laarakker (Quality & Safety), among others.
The evening ended festively with an enjoyable BBQ in Scheveningen. The event was transformed into a pub quiz, organised by enthusiastic Area Managers Rob Beekmans and Rick van de Wouw. The pub quiz provided a memorable conclusion to the event.
Looking back on the event, LMI can conclude that connection and inclusiveness were key. It was a unique opportunity where knowledge was shared, and valuable connections were made. Participants returned to their outstations inspired and full of new insights.
