Dear Colleagues, The past few weeks have been marked by a number of interesting events. On 28 February, the EMT++ teambuilding “Bosdag” took place, bringing together the Digital Data & Analytics Council and the Innovation, Sustainability and Improvement Council. The day focused on digitisation and innovation, featuring interesting discussions and presentations. We can look back on a successful day full of inspiration and insights. What’s more, the Air France KLM Connect Day took place on 5 March in Paris, attended by senior management representing Air France, KLM and Transavia. The future of the respective airlines was discussed at this important event, focusing on cooperation and innovation. Yesterday on 7 March, the annual KLM E&M Skills Challenge took place in Hangar 14, with students from four Regional Training Centres (ROCs) showcasing their skills and talents. The best eight aircraft technicians from the centres competed in the KLM E&M Technical Challenge in teams of two. The event was organised to generate inspiration for the Dutch airline industry and introduce the students to KLM E&M. Besides the challenge, students could visit stands and take tours of the Engine Shop and Component Services. Hopefully we will soon be able to welcome a new generation of technicians at KLM E&M. You can read more below and watch the after-movie. And, you have this year’s E&M info sessions to look forward to from 3 to 6 June 2024, offering a great opportunity for everyone to come together and gather information and inspiration for the future of E&M. More information will follow soon.

“I want to be the bridge to the next generation.” - Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan once said: “I want to be the bridge to the next generation.” At KLM E&M, we also want to be the bridge to the next generation of innovators. That’s why we work within an innovation ecosystem at KLM E&M, where different teams cooperate and add value to innovation projects. You can read more about this in this edition of Scope. Let’s work together to build KLM E&M’s future. Best regards,

KLM E&M Skills Challenge 2024

On 7 March, students from ROC schools (Deltion, ROC Tilburg, ROC Amsterdam and Vista College Maastricht) presented their skills and talents in the yearly Skills Challenge event. Upon arrival all the students received the unique KLM E&M safety gloves. The event was kicked-off by our EVP Ton Dortmans.

The best 8 aircraft technicians of the schools were chosen, and these students went to work in teams of 2. They took part in the KLM E&M Technical challenge making this day full of friendly competition with lots of fun.

But what is the Skills Challenge? The Skills Challenge is organised nationally by WorldSkills Netherlands. They want to make VMBO and MBO students aware of their talents, opportunities, and possibilities. They inspire young people to think about their future and help them see the possibilities. For MBO students, they organize professional competitions, also known as Skills Heroes. Through a preliminary round at school and a qualifying competition, MBO students can reach the national finals. There they compete for the title of best craftsman in the Netherlands in their field!

More information about Skills Heroes can be found on their website: WorldSkills Netherlands | WSNL

Why do we host a Skills Challenge at KLM E&M?

Another question is: why do we organize such an event? It’s simple! The answer lies in our commitment to create a culture of quality, creativity, and continuous growth within Dutch aviation. By providing students with the opportunity to show their skills in a competitive yet supportive environment, we aim to not only recognize and reward talent among the students in the Netherlands but also inspire ongoing learning and development within KLM E&M. We want to inspire the students for Dutch aviation and introduce them to KLM E&M. Hopefully we can welcome these students to our organisation in the future.

The Challenges

The students had two assignments to complete in the competition.

Assignment 1: Escape slide Assignment 1 was in the escape slide shop where the students had to repair and test an escape slide according to the manual.

Assignment 2: the ovens Assignment 2 was with the ovens. The students had to carry out an inspection and an assignment related to fault finding, also known as troubleshooting. They had to discover and repair a malfunction at the ovens.

Stands & Tours

In addition to the challenge, we also organized a fantastic day program! Students could visit 20 stands to gather information and get inspired. In addition to topics related to E&M, our partners EPCOR, RJC, JetSupport, Defensie, and GKN Fokker were present to inspire students in the field of aviation. Additionally, students received a tour of the Engine Shop and Component Services to learn more about our organization. And the press was also present on this day. Both RTL News and NH News were present to report on this Skills Challenge. View the NH News item here.

Skills Finals At the end of the day, the jury would deliberate and the top 3 would be announced. The decision was difficult because the scores were close to each other. In the end, the jury decided that all 4 teams will advance to the final in the Brabanthallen (21-22 March), where the winners will be announced. Martijn de Vries closed the day and all teams received a participation prize. In the end, we could measure the success of the day not just in the demonstration of skills, but in the smiles shared and the memories made! We are excited to say that the students had a lot of fun while learning with and about KLM E&M!

Curious about the atmosphere of the event?

Watch the aftermovie.

See you next year for the next Skills Challenge edition!

KLM E&M Tech Centre update: Hangar 10 renovations and replacement of Building 404

As communicated earlier, we’ve started several projects to get the KLM E&M Tech Centre off the ground. KLM E&M has joined forces with KLM Real Estate to achieve this. This article looks at two of their current projects: renovating Hangar 10 and replacing Building 404 – also known as the “Egg Box”.

Hangar 10 The plans for Hangar 10 have been approved by KLM’s Executive and Supervisory Boards, involving its complete, major renovation. The building was originally commissioned in 1955 and later fully renovated in 1968. It has served numerous purposes, recently being used for ad-hoc AOG maintenance, a temporary logistics centre and engine storage facility, among other things. To continue using the building more intensively and sustainably in the future, major renovations are needed.

Following this, the hangar will be used by KLM E&M (Bay 1) and Transavia (Bay 2). Structural hangar capacity is necessary for both E&M and Transavia to meet the maintenance needs of the envisaged fleet. Additionally, current operations in Bay 1 – including the GEnx split/mate process – will be moved back to Hangar 10.

Kicking off during the first half 2024 Plans are now well underway and, as things stand, demolition works for the hangar are set to start in the first quarter of 2024. Joint use of Hangar 10 with Transavia will make it possible to dispose of Hangar 5. This will generate cost savings. Renovating the hangar will significantly elevate sustainability, with targeted energy savings of over 80% compared to the current situation. This will be achieved by taking Hangar 10 off gas, with more than 50% of its remaining energy requirement being met by solar panels on the roof. This will make it the first hangar to go off gas.

Building 404 Building 404 is now 40 years old and studies have shown that major short-term investments would be needed to make it future-proof and more sustainable. It has also become clear that replacing the existing building with a new one would offer a cheaper and better alternative than renovating the existing building. A detailed proposal will be presented to the employee participation bodies.

New office building in use by 2027 The proposed decision is to integrate the new headquarters for E&M (KLM E&M Tech Centre Head Quarter) into Hangar 10, where the office building will be combined with the low-rise building of Hangar 10, allowing the foundations of Hangar 10 to be reused. Construction will take place simultaneously with the renovation of Hangar 10, with the office building expected to be available by 2027. The plan is that all the departments now housed in Building 404 will move to the new building, as well as the IMO colleagues who arrived more recently, along with the E&M colleagues in Hangar 10 (including the Hans Veldkamp team and Permit Office).

The plans for Building 404 are now being detailed further. An external agency has already conducted an attendance measurement and workplace survey among the current and future occupants of Building 404.

Building the future of E&M Both Hangar 10 and Building 404 will be set up to support the “Winning Way of Working”. It will be a place of inspiration connecting our operations and our E&M staff. The new buildings will also contribute towards achieving the KLM E&M Tech Centre’s sustainability goals. KLM E&M therefore contributes to KLM’s ambition of transforming into a net positive company, while reducing costs and creating memorable experiences for both our E&M colleagues and our customers.

Innovation ecosystem 2.0

You may have heard of the innovation ecosystem. What is that exactly?

The innovation ecosystem consists of several innovation teams, in this case KLM E&M. This is part of the broader KLM innovation ecosystem. These teams come together and add their value to the innovation projects. Because innovation often transcends departments, it is important that the various areas of expertise come together. This is what an ecosystem is for.

Two years ago, we started coming together as innovators. In 2022 we met 3 times. These sessions were mainly about sharing information, mutual connection and education. With the aim of creating the innovation ecosystem.

In 2023 we organized some inspiration sessions. In addition, a study was carried out to identify the points for improvement from the members of the young ecosystem. By 2024, we want to grow the innovation ecosystem into a mature workable methodology. Over the next 6 months, Marjorie Milovic (Technology Hub), Bradley van Tigchelhoven and Amna Chedhli (MROLab) will focus on setting up the innovation ecosystem 2.0. The kick-off took place on 27 February, in which we looked back on the research and outcomes, the previous forest days and looked ahead to the next steps for the next 6 months.

What will you notice about this? In the future, you can expect regular updates on the various innovation projects taking place within E&M. For example, we will publish videos about implementations, interesting prototypes or demonstrations. In doing so, we put both innovations and innovators in the spotlight. You will regularly find these in the E&M Scope, or an article about the projects via the KLM NewsApp.

In addition, we will draw attention to innovation through regular inspiration sessions. Here we will receive various speakers, both internal and external. These can be visited as a networking opportunity or purely informative. Speakers will help you understand their projects or themes, which will hopefully be inspiring to others!

We hope to see you at some of these events and hope to inspire you through our communication.

We will keep you informed of our process in the near future. Are you interested in participating in the ecosystem or do you want to know more? Contact us at: innovation-em@klm.com

Starting 1 March: compulsory e-learning for Schiphol pass

Schiphol will soon introduce new Safety & Security e-learning modules. These will be compulsory for new Schiphol pass applications, pass extensions and new authorisations.

Update: the introduction of the four new, mandatory Safety & Security e-learning courses for new pass applications, renewals or. new authorizations as of March 1 will be postponed. Read more about this in this appendix. In addition to the General and Platform modules introduced two years ago, there are now also modules for Baggage, Schiphol-East, Perimeter Roads and Terminal. Which modules are necessary depends on the areas you are authorised to enter. Employees will also follow a short refresher course each year to maintain the level of knowledge and safety awareness among all Schiphol pass holders.

Clarification of changes Taking one or more modules of the Safety & Security e-learning programme will soon be compulsory for all new and renewal Schiphol pass applications. If you already have a Schiphol pass, you will not need to follow the e-learning modules until your pass is due for renewal or an additional authorisation is added.

E-learning modules for each area Which modules you will need to follow depends on the authorisations on your Schiphol pass and therefore the areas to which you have access. There are now a total of six Safety & Security e-learning modules. All Schiphol pass applicants must follow the General module. Those with access to several areas must follow additional modules. The e-learning modules are available in Dutch and English and must be completed in advance.

Preparation for the Safety & Security test

The Safety & Security e-learning modules are completed in preparation for the Safety & Security test that employees must take at the Badge Centre when collecting their Schiphol pass. The e-learning programme is based on the Schiphol Regulations and replaces the Safety & Security pocket guide.

Follow the e-learning modules through the Schiphol Learning Hub

You can follow the e-learning modules online at a location and time of your choice through the Schiphol Learning Hub. When you apply for the Schiphol pass in e-Vesta, an account is automatically created in the Schiphol Learning Hub. Once you are logged in, you will see which e-learning modules to follow. Once you have completed the e-learning modules, this is automatically recorded in the Schiphol Learning Hub and at the Badge Centre.

An employee at the Badge Centre will check whether the prescribed e-learning modules have been followed when you collect your pass. This is a prerequisite for taking the Safety & Security test and subsequently issuing the Schiphol pass.

Compulsory annual refresher course

Another new requirement is that employees must take a short refresher course every year. You will receive a prompt for the refresher course via the email address entered on applying for your pass. It is important to take this refresher course in time to prevent your pass from being blocked. Pass holders will receive up to three reminders.

More information?

For more information, check out the FAQs on Safety & Security e-learning.

If you should have any general questions, don’t hesitate to contact the Security Training Centre via vtc@schiphol.nl. If you have any questions about Schiphol Learning Hub accounts, Manager/planner privileges you can contact:

  • learningdevelopment@schiphol.nl for functional or technical issues;
  • hsetraining@schiphol.nl for e-learning module content.

More information will follow once the exact date for introducing the compulsory modules is known.

AOG involving PH-BVA

Aircraft on Ground (AOG), a well-known term for many within the airline industry. What exactly took place during the PH-BVA’s AOG? Below, the AOG Managers outline the chain of events.

“During the FC check on the PH-BVA (B777-300) in Hangar 14, cracks were found on the trailing edges of both wings. This caused disruption during the FC check and the delivery time was greatly exceeded. This jeopardised slot scheduling for Hangar 14. A decision was reached to appoint an AOG Manager from the Hangar Lead H11-12 population (on duty in day shift), to isolate the complaint and carry out crack repairs in Hangar 11. This involved several parties, including Hangar 14 for direction, supervision and support, Corrective Unit Hangar 11 for ad-hoc hands-on support and sheet metal workers and structural specialists from Plant Support Team Hangar 11 to implement and lead the repairs. Engineering was engaged for advice, supervision and communication with Boeing. Additionally, colleagues from REPA, the Engine department and the AOG desk played a major role during the process..

After the aircraft was positioned in Hangar 11, a stress-free jacking procedure was initiated, the tank hatches were opened and the fuel tanks were ventilated before starting the repair work. A question came from E&M Director Operations as to whether the turnaround time for execution by the Boeing AOG Team could be shortened. After consultation with Boeing, it turned out that they could only be on site after more than a week, with a repair lead time of two weeks. The KLM Sheet Metal Workers simultaneously indicated they could get the job done by 5 February 2024 with a dedicated team of three staff members per shift, working Monday to Friday and nights plus weekends on a best-effort basis. Because of time savings, cost savings (ultimately around $1.8 million in additional costs) and rock-solid confidence in our colleagues, we made the decision to go with our own people. In the end, the crack repair was completed physically by 28 January. A week ahead of schedule! To fit a landing gear door (repaired internally), the aircraft had to be repositioned in Hangar 14, where final work for the crack repair was also carried out. The remaining FC work was then also completed. The aircraft was ultimately delivered four days earlier than initially projected. All in all, this was an exciting project with many non-performance risks on all sides, but above all with massive commitment from all the colleagues involved and fantastic cooperation between the respective teams!”

Check-in with… Philip van Vliet

In this edition, we’d like to digitally introduce our new E&M colleague Philip van Vliet. He’s 27 years old and joined KLM in 2022. He took up his latest post as Customer Interface Repair Officer (CIRO) in December 2023. He has a passion for our industry and he’s also a big fan of politics. Entrepreneurship is in his blood. As a student, he had his own business making and repairing computers, focusing on helping the elderly.

Nice to meet you Philip, did you always know you wanted to work in the airline industry? “Yes, actually, because I’ve played flight simulator at home since I was 10. I make all the flight plans and the like myself and have three professional screens at home to create the simulator setting. Last weekend, I flew from Zurich to Amsterdam in the flight simulator. Originally, I always dreamed of becoming a pilot, but when I left high school in 2015, the demand for pilots was low. I’m also very interested in political science, so I ended up studying that in The Hague and America at the University of Wisconsin GreenBay. This was a fantastic time in my life. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to return to the Netherlands to help my parents with their business. At the moment, while working at KLM, I’m still studying in The Hague and aiming to be finished in December 2024.”

A destination you’d still like to visit? “Definitely New Zealand, but I also want to visit every destination in the US because I’m a huge America fan.”

Can you tell us a bit about your current position and what it entails? “It’s actually quite simply: we are the spider in the web of components. Components arrive here and go out from here, and we bear administrative responsibility. We also handle customer care, responding to questions about components, as well as some financial matters. I’m at home here and I work with great colleagues. I work in Building 425 at the Hydraulics Shop. Feel free to visit for a chat!”

Do you have any hobbies we should know about? “My big love is skiing. I started at the age of two with my brother. I go every year; if no one can come, I go alone. Preferably to Switzerland!”

Outstation: FCO-TT

Line Maintenance International is responsible for aircraft maintenance at some 50 KLM outstations and for 150 other partners and customers around the world. Colleague Tony Zitti works as a Maintenance Manager at the FCO-TT outstation in Rome. He gave us a peek behind the scenes at this outstation.

“The FCO-TT outstation is one of the biggest Line Maintenance International stations in Europe. After the long Covid-19 period, during which our workload decreased dramatically (since Rome focuses mainly on tourism), we returned to pre-pandemic operational levels in 2022. We’re now experiencing an increase in maintenance work, with new customers choosing for KLM E&M’s efficiency and accuracy.

Starting from March, our workforce will expand from 20 to 30 colleagues, leading to a complete reorganisation of the workload in terms of services, vehicles and facilities. This is quite a challenging project, but we’re managing thanks to excellent staff cooperation and dedication. We’ve grown enormously within a timeframe of just two months.

I’m really proud to lead a group of skilled, reliable and loyal colleagues. What makes all the difference is the family atmosphere we’ve built up over the years, offering friendly and emotional support, as well as bearing responsibility. I’m convinced that working with colleagues you like makes the process of being productive and achieving goals far easier. In fact, we’ve achieved continuous growth over the years by focusing on high-quality services and committed staff. Our organisation is now reaping the benefits of its long-term strategy. One of the main problems we’ve come to face results from the reduction of flights during the winter season in Rome. We’ve had to cope with such inconveniences by sending engineers to other LMI stations. Experts say the air travel market will change in the foreseeable future to see greater passenger numbers during the winter season. And indeed, many of our current customers are planning to increase flight frequency to Rome, even during the winter months. Ultimately, air traffic will become more evenly spread throughout the year. One of the topics I’d still like to work on is our recruitment policy in the future. Most engineers at FCO-TT are in their 50s, and some of them are set to retire over the next five to ten years. It will be difficult to replace them with staff possessing the same level of knowledge and experience. We need to change our long-term HR plan and develop a system to train a new generation of skilled engineers. One of hiring young, committed colleagues to be mentored by our qualified staff, elevating their skills to a higher level of competence.”
