Hi colleagues, Last week saw another couple of events at E&M. For example, the week started with the Young E&M event in Hangar 10 where I met around 120 E&M colleagues up to the age of 35. During the event, we gave an update on recruitment, our strategic recruitment plan, our operation, the KLM E&M 2024 strategy, and on work environment improvements. The event ended with a Q&A. It was great to see this young, enthusiastic generation together. After weeks of preparation and input from E&M colleagues, with support of the councils and the division council, last Tuesday was the festive opening of the Food Courts at five locations in the Technical Area. It was a well-attended opening with positive reactions and a free tasting of various dishes. There is now a wide choice of hot meals, sandwiches, and snacks, as well as a monthly theme at all KLM company restaurant locations. Thank you to all our colleagues who have worked hard on this new Food Court concept! We are proud of these new Food Courts and hope everyone will enjoy a tasty and healthy lunch or dinner. Behind the scenes, colleagues are also working on two upcoming events. First, MRO Americas takes place from 9th -11th April in Chicago, USA, where we will again be present with an AFI KLM E&M booth to meet our current and future E&M customers. There will also be a separate section where we will pay extra attention to our LEAP. Secondly, from 3rd – 6th June, our E&M Infosessions will take place. Colleagues at Airframe, Component Services, and Engine Services working in the operation will be scheduled to attend. For other colleagues, registration starts from 23rd April. Put these dates in your diaries and make sure you're there! This week on 1 April 2024, a long-awaited moment took place: the split of our Airframe organization into a Wide Body and Narrow Body unit. With three kick-off moments, we commemorated the start of the new Airframe organization. We celebrated this milestone with the present colleagues over some food and drinks. A special meeting was also held to say goodbye to 737 colleagues in Hangar 14. Replacing these colleagues in other teams within Hangar 11/12 and Centrum has a significant impact, also on their social life, and we appreciate their flexibility. We wish them success in these new teams! You can read more about this further on. Another point of attention for our colleagues is that at E&M, we have started awarding the Blue Heart. Who do you think makes the difference for our colleagues and/or our customers and deserves this special recognition? Read later in this Scope how you can nominate a deserving colleague.
“In order to succeed, you must fail.” - Michael Jordan

Festive opening Food Courts
After weeks of preparation, adjustments, discussions and, above all, a lot of input from E&M colleagues, the time had finally come last Tuesday; the opening of the Food Courts at five locations.
It was a festive opening, a coffee cart with fresh barista coffee and a free tasting of, among other things, sausage rolls, roti roll and satay bread. The opening was well attended and the reactions were enthusiastic:
“Finally full house again and how nice that there is a wide choice again!”
With this opening we are taking a path that we expect will please everyone. From hot meals and broth to a bag of nuts and a Twix. But also consider sandwiches that are freshly prepared and replenished with a smile from an employee. There is also a monthly theme that is the same at all KLM company restaurant locations.
We at KLM E&M are extremely proud of the opening of all Food Courts at Schiphol-Oost and hope that you will enjoy a delicious, responsible lunch or dinner.
We would like to thank all attendees for their attendance and involvement! Without your input the opening could not have been such a great success.
We would also like to hear your findings about these new Food Courts in the future.

Organizational changes for Airframe starting on 1 April
1 April 2024 was an important day for many Airframe employees. With the start of the summer schedule, multiple organizational changes came into effect. For many employees, it means a change with significant impact on their work location, team, and schedule. Airframe performance has been under heavy pressure for a year and a half. Despite the dedication and commitment of our people, we have not been able to turn the tide and the impact is increasing rather than decreasing. Our processes are falling short of handling the current complexity, and some recent interventions from "Resize & reshape" make it difficult to get our processes in order. It is therefore necessary to make further interventions so that we can get back on track.
Reducing workload and redistributing capacity As of 1 April, we have outsourced various Airframe activities to free up capacity for other locations with undercapacity. This means that more than 70 colleagues from Hangar 14 C-lines and Line Maintenance International are now working in the Narrow Body A & AOG line in Hangar 12, the Wide body A & AOG line in Hangar 11, and at Line Maintenance Schiphol. It is a change with significant impact for these colleagues. In the past few weeks, these colleagues have said goodbye to their old teams and met with new teams, managers, and work locations. From 1 April, they have actually started in their new teams. Wide Body & Narrow Body split in Hangar 11 & 12 The organizational form Preventive, Corrective & Maintenance Support introduced in "Resize & Reshape" no longer fit in the current context. Together with the employees, an alternative organizational model has been worked on intensively over the past year, fitting the employees' wishes and the company's needs, which started on 1 April. Hangar 11 & 12 have been split into a Wide Body (A & AOG) and Narrow Body (A & AOG) plant since that date. This change is also impactful. All teams have been reformed based on licenses and preferences, new schedules and work agreements have been made, and the Hangars have been rearranged based on the WB/NB split. On 31 March and 1 April, three kick-off moments took place to commemorate this moment.
Restart of Maintenance Control Center As of 1 April, it has also been decided to restart the Maintenance Control Center. Here too, the operational need was looked at in combination with the employees' wishes. The Duty Maintenance Managers and Technical Specialists form a separate unit again with their own Plant Leader, reporting to the SVP Airframe. Cabine Team Center to LMS As of 1 April, the Cabin Maintenance team working at Schiphol Center has hierarchically switched from the Central Maintenance Support Unit to the Line Maintenance Schiphol organization. This was also the employees' wish to be part of the organization with the colleagues they work with every day. We wish all employees success in the new working environment with new colleagues. These changes are not all easy. We appreciate everyone's effort and flexibility!

Improvement of DDs thanks to multidisciplinary team
Since COVID-19, we have seen a large increase in DDs at KLM. These include both Minimal Equipment List (MEL) DDs and Non Safety Related Equipment(NSREs), impacting KLM-wide operations. To get a grip on the KLM-summer operation of 2024, 5 must-win-battles have been determined. With summer just around the corner and the experience that the number of complaints rises in summer, it is now vital to bring down the number of DDs. Both KLM and E&M have taken action regarding this.
The DD Sweep team, consisting of a multidisciplinary team of KLM and McKinsey colleagues, has been set up to focus on solving DDs. Two operational DD Sweep teams are also operating at Line Maintenance Schiphol and from Hangar 11 to handle DDs.
And with success, as in recent months we have seen a decline in DD stands. By continuing to pick up DDs and learning from the resulting short-term adjustments, we are simultaneously looking at how to keep the number of DDs manageable in the longer term.
Thanks to the DD Sweep team, we can go into the summer knowing that DDs will be under control. The big challenge will still be materials. The supplier (OEM) still don’t have the deliveries under control.

KLM-strategy: Fly, improve, innovate.
We are KLM. We connect the world through flying.
This has been a source of pride for us for over a hundred years.
The world is changing fast, but KLM will continue to proudly fly around the world.
We connect people around the world and have been doing so for over 100 years. Thanks to all our KLM colleagues, people are able to visit distant relatives, maintain international relationships or discover stunning new destinations. Together we create memorable experiences for millions of our customers. In addition to carrying passengers, every single day we transport essential goods all around the world. Medicine, food, and a wide range of crucial components that keep our society running. None of this functions without our dedicated people who, day in and day out, maintain our aircraft and make sure our operation keeps running. They work on our aircraft, engines, and components, ensuring that all parts gtake to the skies in the best condition, and that each aircraft can be used to its best advantage for our operation.
We're proud - but not perfect. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed once again the critical nature of our work. We brought Dutch citizens home and transported PPE and vaccinations that saved lives. Unfortunately, as a company, we also suffered considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This led to fewer colleagues, fewer destinations and other difficult, but necessary, choices. We are now recovering, welcoming new colleagues, and stabilising our operations. But the truth is: we're not there yet. We're working very hard to get there, but some problems require a little more time
This is certainly being felt even more at E&M now that many parts are not in stock or available and the right staff are harder to recruit. There is still a lot of work to do, which is why our operation, our people and safety are our top priority.
Flying has a future.
KLM colleagues are not the kind of people who only bask in the glow of their proud history, or only worry about the here and now. We're always looking to move forward as a company, and we are keen to build a bright future. We have a great responsibility to make things not only better for our people, but also for the environment we inhabit. Simply operating fewer flights or suspending air travel altogether is not the solution, air travel is a crucial means of transport. But we have to do things better.
Improving for all of us.
Step by step, we are leading the industry in operating cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient flights. New aircraft emit lower emissions. New aircraft generate less noise. New aviation fuels are less polluting, and operational measures to reduce CO₂ also contribute to our goals. Both the big and small steps that we take today and tomorrow will ensure that we can achieve major and unique breakthroughs in the future. For example, we are taking steps to reduce fuel consumption by flying more efficiently and replacing fuel with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). A new fleet, less weight on board and electrification of ground equipment also contribute to this endeavour. This has many advantages, but it will also benefit our people in the operation. Applying predictive maintenance has already been a step forward by and for us, reducing unplanned downtime and repair costs, while improving the reliability of flight schedules and the passage of passengers. This is the only way we can keep connecting people in the future, the only way to ensure that our children and grandchildren can continue to explore the globe and encounter other worlds.
Innovation requires a solid foundation.
If we intend to rely on our full strength in the next 100 years, we must continue to lead the way and pioneer. We will only achieve this with a solid foundation, making a stable operation our top priority, to offer our customers the service they expect from us. In the meantime, each and every day we take a step closer to the future. We do this not only for KLM, but also for our international customer base of more than 200 customers worldwide. With a better and renewed KLM for our people, our customers, and our network.
Let's journey together towards our 200-year milestone. If we as KLM colleagues continue to work together and take pride in our work, we will gradually improve. We will ensure safe and smooth operations. We will fly cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient aircraft. It means continuing to connect people, transport essential goods and discover stunning destinations.
This is the only way we can demonstrate to society that a healthy aviation industry is crucial to our collective future.
Fly, improve, innovate. We are KLM.

New Generator test bench for the Hydraulics team
On 20 March, we celebrated the commissioning of the new generator drive stand, the LMP250, launched to test the generators of their aircraft. This was celebrated together with everyone involved in the project, where Dominik spoke beautiful words for the shop.

This project, which started two years ago, replaces the old test bench and aims to increase the reliability and functionality of the test facilities. The LMP250, manufactured by Test-Fuchs in Austria, helps shop hydraulics to further build its future.
The drive stand is able to test not only the current capabilities, but also the new capabilities for the A320/321 NEO and A350 aircraft. After implementation of the new capabilities, a total of 22 capabilities will be implemented on the LMP250. The employees of the operators are excited about the new capabilities and believe the LMP250 will increase the reliability of their work.
In the coming weeks, the LMP250 will be installed and calibrated in G425, after which KLM will enter the acceptance period. KLM is looking forward to the new options that will go live in Q2 and Q3. This is an important step for KLM to optimize our operational capabilities.

New KLM corporate identity and KLM E&M logo
On 24th March, KLM started rolling out a new corporate identity. This new house style can be recognised by a new font and a visual link to the journey our customers take with us. This can be seen in the form of a line (route) that is static or dynamic in connection with a point. The symbolic destination. With a new font and a distinctive visual style, KLM will soon be easily recognisable in our communications to customers and employees.

The new font has a contemporary and fresh look and is called KLM Universal Sans. The advantage of this font is that it is very good and also really easier to read in online environments. Over the past 10 years, we've noticed that our customers want to communicate digitally as much as possible, so it's great that we're now showing an improvement there.
What also stands out is the addition of the KLM logo in customer communications: Travel Well. This is the name of KLM's new brand platform. You can read more about that here.
The video below will give you a good idea of what will change.
When will I notice the changes?
As mentioned, we started the rollout last week, which means we have an overlapping period where the old and new branding are both used. There are many places where we have to replace the font, for example: on MyKLM, the apps we use on route, and our website KLM.com. Our aircraft that feature KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and signs with the KLM logo at our outstations will also be replaced in due course. We want the old KLM Noa font digitally replaced with the new one everywhere by 27th September. After that, it may not be used.
The replacement of signs at outstations and the lettering on our aircraft may take a bit longer. This will be done at logical times, such as when an aircraft is painted or scheduled for maintenance in the Hangar for a longer period of time.
Office tools available mid-April
For colleagues who frequently work with programmes such as Word and PowerPoint, templates will become available in mid-April. The new e-mail signature will then also be available. The KLM Universal Sans font will not be available for Office with the exception of PowerPoint. For other Office programmes, we use the Arial font. More on that later via the NewsApp.
Replacement KLM E&M logo
The observant E&M colleague has not failed to notice that our current E&M logo is formatted in the KLM Noa font. So, with this new house style, our logo will also be changed to the KLM Universal Sans logo. Soon, these new logos will be available on Brix.afiklmem.com. The rollout of this new house style started last week, this means you will have another overlapping period where the old and new E&M logos will both be used. As previously stated, we aim to have digitally replaced the old KLM Noa font with the new one everywhere by 27th September.

“I am convinced that everybody has good ideas.”
Innovation Stories: Harry Nienhuis
Are you curious about the faces behind innovation at E&M? In this series, of which this is the first article, we will put our innovative colleagues in the spotlight. In addition, we will also zoom in on the projects they are proud of. This allows you to directly link the innovation to the person! We kick off the series with innovator Harry Nienhuis! Read more to find out about Harry and his innovations.
Are you or do you have an innovative colleague that we really need to interview? Of course, we don't want to miss this story! Contact us at: Innovation-em@klm.com Within the operational environment, there are a lot of tasks that can be simplified or optimized. Airframe has, within the Material, Equipment & Facilities department, its very own innovation workshop, in which Harry Nienhuis designs and creates equipment. Harry utilizes his experience as a ground engineer to adapt his solutions to the needs of his colleagues. He understands the processes and maintains a short distance from the work floor. Harry's functional lead describes him as:
"I work closely with Harry and am always amazed and surprised how he uses his imagination, empathy and creativity to come up with a great idea and prototype. As a person and colleague, it is also a pleasure and honor to be able to work with him and we as a team do not shy away from any challenge, because we have Harry." -Nauhsad Soebrati, Project Lead Equipment & Facility MEF
Innovation is not only about groundbreaking technological advancements; it often arises from the need to solve practical everyday challenges, as demonstrated by Harry Nienhuis's inventive solutions. He works on various projects, and as of writing he has over 10 current projects.
He likes to take his time to think of the best solution to the issues that come his way. When asked how he would describe innovations, Harry humbly responds: “I like to make people’s work easier and safer. Helping them work smarter and use their time more efficiently.” This can be seen in his working process, listening to colleagues but also listening to their views on the issues they are trying to tackle. Speaking with Harry, you can immediately tell how enthusiastic he is about helping his colleagues and solving their problems. Harry documents the projects and results in binders. When we ask him which project he is most proud of, he proudly shows the binder with photos of the adapter dolly. He shows the results of his work very proudly and keeps the photos documented in binders.
The request Faced with an important request from the engine change team to improve the transportation and storage of heavy adaptors used for engine changes (the big yellow items in photos), the workshop employee came up with an effective idea.
The problem Weighing 228 kg each, these adaptors, used with the motorcycle dolly to hang from the lifts (Cobras), are conventionally stored on a wooden pallet but can't be lifted safely with a forklift due to their incorrect center of gravity. Handling them lengthwise is also unsafe, and their hinged lifting bars pose further risks, as they have the potential to fall and cause injury if not handled with extreme caution. Thus, the team urgently needed a safer and more efficient solution to overcome these logistical obstacles.
The solution - "Adaptor dolly" The solution consists of a dolly comprising two forklift tubes mounted on legs with attached protrusions. This uncomplicated design allows the adaptors to be manually driven onto the dolly and securely connected. A conductor ensures proper positioning, while a rubber cap engages with a bushing and a slider encircles the lifting bar. With the insertion of a pin, each adaptor is fully locked in place, ensuring safe transport and storage. His idea not only significantly quickened the process of transport and storage but, more importantly, increases safety in handling heavy adaptors.
As Harry Nienhuis mentioned: "Now it seems simple, and the final solution is also simple, but to get there took quite a bit of thinking, and that is, of course, the challenge."
Sometimes, the best innovations are simple solutions! Stay tuned for more everyday—simple or not—innovative stories from KLM E&M.

Capital Investments at KLM E&M: Beyond financial goals!
At KLM E&M, our commitment to innovation and environmentally conscious practices guides every step we take, whether it's the initial ones or those that follow. Being the first to take these steps gives us even more reason to celebrate our progress and accomplishments!
This time, we are pleased to announce our initiative as the first unit within KLM to transition from purely financially driven Capital Investments (CI) to a combined approach integrating both financial and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) motives. January 2023 marked a new era for KLM E&M!
Since then, it has become mandatory to consider not only the financial but also the impact on ESG factors for every Capital Investment discussed in the Investment Committee. We're not just stopping at qualitative assessments; we encourage calculating the impact on emissions wherever possible, adding depth and precision to our decisions.
What have we achieved up to today? After completing a comprehensive analysis of all 93 approved Capital Investment documents from 2023 and assessing their impact on ESG categories such as waste, social sustainability, staff safety, and CO2 ground emissions, we are excited to present the following results:
- 21 CIs will reduce annual scope 1&2 E&M emissions by 24%
- 16 CIs will reduce E&M’s annual scope 3 transport emissions by 8%
- 15 CI's will enable KLM flight CO2 reduction
- 21 CIs have a positive impact on waste
- 23 CIs have a positive impact on employee safety
- 33 CIs have a positive impact on social sustainability
- 25 CIs have a positive impact on electricity efficiency
- Only 5 CIs have a positive impact on electricity efficiency
Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, while Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heating, and cooling. Scope 3 emissions cover all other indirect emissions in our value chain, including those from purchased goods and services, business travel, and employee commuting. Check https://myklm.klm.com/nl/web/engineering-maintenance/sustainability-artikelen for our in-depth explanation.

As Erik van der Niet, the Business Controller who coordinated the project, mentions: “It makes me proud to see all the positive impacts on ESG in the CI documents!" Showcase Snapshot As an example, our recent investment in replacing two grinding machines with one multipurpose grinding machine at Engine Services has resulted in the following sustainable benefits:
- Improved energy efficiency, with a saving of 20 kW (from 100 kW to 80 kW)
- Increasing in-house part repair capacity for grinding reduces outsourcing, leading to an annual transport emission reduction of 475 tonnes CO2
- Compliance with safety regulations
- Enhanced quality control and reduced waste
Next steps
- Continuous monthly analysis of ESG impacts
- Standardized definitions and calculation methodologies within KLM; launch a starter-kit for CI and Business Cases in Q2 to ensure alignment of all CIs within KLM
- Transition from qualitative to quantitative impact assessment wherever possible
- Sharing knowledge about ESG with the E&M controllers
Ensuring that each investment counts not only financially but also in advancing to a more sustainable future for all stakeholders is our priority!

Come on board at E&M: improvements in the onboarding process
At KLM E&M, we’re constantly improving our processes, especially when it comes to the onboarding process for new employees. Therefore, we have launched several initiatives to streamline and improve the onboarding process.
One of the most significant changes is the rollout of the central E&M onboarding team at Component Services, Airframe, and Engine Services. From April, this team will also be available for Staff and Engineering. This team has already welcomed more than 90 new E&M employees by phone, provided them with important information, and handed them a welcome pack.
Nieuwe E&M Onboardingsdag
We are also busy developing a new E&M Onboarding Day. It is important to give new employees a warm welcome and create the 'wow effect' in an interactive way during this day. So, this is where we have put our focus when designing the new E&M Onboarding Day. The first new E&M Onboarding Day will take place in April.
But we are not done yet! We're also improving the workwear process, scheduling training during the onboarding period, IT for new employees, VGB issues and the structure for the onboarding period.
This is how we ensure that new employees get a smooth start at KLM E&M.
E&M and our people
AOG of the PH-BQA
Aircraft on Ground (AOG), a well-known term for many within the aviation world. What exactly took place at the PH-BQA's AOG?
Just before Christmas 2023, PH-BQA suffered a leakage in the left engine on a flight from Amsterdam to New York. The aircraft had to divert to Boston Massachusetts. The pilot was able to land the aircraft safely with sufficient oil pressure, but with an empty oil tank. The local technical services of British Airways and Delta immediately tried to find the leak, but unfortunately without success.
Resolving the problem required communication and coordination between various parties, including Air France, British Airways, Delta Atlanta, and Delta Boston. Remotely, this process did not run smoothly, so it was decided to send an AOG team from Amsterdam to Boston Massachusetts. This team was led by E&M colleague Aad Mank with Michael den Boer as engineer.
AOG Manager, Aad Mank (Hangar 11) tells us more about this:
"Once we arrived at the cargo apron in Boston Massachusetts, the aircraft appeared to be in full wind and rain. After several hours, the AOG team received the necessary airport passes and work could begin the next day.
The engine had undergone a water wash, or in other words, cleaning of the internal part of the engine, on the day of departure from Amsterdam, and suspicions centred on water penetration into the bearing compartments. GE Aerospace recommended drilling the B- and C-sump, inspecting the relevant oil return lines and strainer, all according to the General Electric Service Bulletin.
After cleaning and rebuilding the strainer and pipes, the aircraft was refuelled to 55 tonnes and taken to the other side of the airfield to test the engine at high power. No leakage was found.
Engineering of KLM and GE, however, insisted that the loose carbon particles from the oil/air separator be vacuumed out before the next flight. Finding a suitable vacuum pump proved difficult. For that reason, it was decided to get a manual pump and a pump with compressed air-driven venturi was assembled using material from the Delta sheet metal workshop. The loose parts were extracted and then the Delta borescope made recordings. This allowed the aircraft to take to the air safely.
After arrival, the aircraft was taken to the Hangar for pylon repair. Unfortunately, during the return flight, there was still oil consumption, but half as much as on the outward flight. On opening the engine, the starter was found to be wet with oil. A starter gasket had possibly been damaged during an installation in the past."
All in all, it was a complex and challenging situation for the AOG team. Nevertheless, they managed to reduce the leakage on site, and get the aircraft safely airborne again. The determination and resourcefulness in finding a suitable vacuum pump are admirable. The story of the PH-BQA shows that sometimes unexpected problems can arise during a flight, but a solution can always be found with the right expertise and cooperation. Congratulations to our E&M colleagues!

C13 inspection on the PH-BXO
KLM UK Engineering recently carried out the C13 inspection on PH-BXO, the first in a series of Boeing 737-900s. This is not the first time a 737 has undergone this thorough inspection, but it’s the first time on an aircraft that’s almost 25 years old.
The inspection began December 2023 with a scheduled Turn Around Time (TAT) of 28 days. This already took into account the limited production capacity during the holidays. The inspection began by removing all seats, galleys and toilets to inspect the wet parts of the cabin. After inspection defects were revealed to the age of the aircraft. Many moving parts were worn out and needed to be replaced. However, this was not the only area where defects were found. Defects were also discovered in the cargo bay, the horizontal stab, the vertical fin and in the tail section around the APU plenum.
Some of these defects could be fixed within the authorised repair limits, while others required repair instructions and approval from the OEM, in this case Boeing. This created extra work for the B1 mechanics who had to record all repairs in the SDR web.
Whereas in an average C-check there are between 10 and 15 SDRs, in this C13 inspection of the PH-BXO, there were some 32 SDRs found. However, KLM UK managed to limit the outage to five days. This is the new reality that maintenance organisations must consider in the future. As aircraft age, this means also more repairs which takes time. It may also take longer to get replacement parts and repairs approved.
All in all, the C13 inspection of the PH-BXO was a thorough and challenging job for KLM UK. However, the aircraft is now back in top condition and safe to fly. A big thank you to our committed E&M colleagues! Also thanks to our KLM E&M inspector who was present at the location.
