Dear colleagues, The E&M Infosessions have only just ended and we're picking up where we left off.

On Monday 10 June I was in Warsaw, Poland, where I visited two KLM E&M customers with our commercial AFKL E&M department. Firstly LOT, a growing component customer for the current 787 and 737, after which I visited Enter Air. Huge growth is visible in Poland and a new airport is more than likely to be built near Warsaw. A good time to maintain our relationships and meet potential new customers. On Wednesday, I was in Paris for a Group meeting of Air France and KLM, and on Thursday the CEO of GOL, Brasil, together with his son dropped by KLM E&M for an informal visit. It was great to show them around E&M and introduce them to colleagues.

Another great event took place this week, we were attending the 787 Operator Experience Conference 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. As part of the 787 Community, a total of 22 operators, including Air France and KLM, will share knowledge and experience and present one 'voice' to OEMs. You'll read more about this in the next E&M Scope.

As announced during the E&M Infosessions, KLM E&M believes it is important that employees are healthy and vital. We want to make sure you can perform at your best and enjoy the work you do. Good health is essential for this.

This week, all regular E&M employees will receive an invitation from van JOHAN BV (mail@johan.nl) to participate in the 'My Vitality Check'. We'd like to ask you to take part. This check will give you insight into your own vitality, and you'll be able to see all the offerings KLM has to offer. It's also possible to have a chat with a vitality coach should you wish to do so.

Besides giving you your personal feedback, this check is also important for E&M. In full compliance with all privacy rules, we gain insight into what is going on at group level. This can never be traced back to an individual, but this information allows us to respond better in the future.

So, keep an eye on your inbox and take part in the 'My Vitality Check'. For more information about this, please read the article below in the Scope.

Kind regards,

E&M in action

Are you going to take part in the ‘My Vitality Check’?

KLM E&M is happy to offer you the opportunity for a personal vitality check, 'My Vitality Check'. This test gives you insight into your health and vitality, and the factors that influence them.

Get to work on the areas you can improve After the survey, you'll receive a report with the feedback of your personal results. You will also see an overview of the offerings that fit in with these results so you can get started on them yourself. You also have the opportunity to have a no obligation chat with a vitality expert. After completing the questionnaire, you can request an appointment yourself. If you like, you can also use your results as input for a discussion with your manager. Of course, it's entirely up to you to decide what you share with the vitality expert and/or your manager. Action plan KLM does not receive personal information about the answers you give. However, KLM does receive information at group level (groups of at least 30 people). With this, KLM can work to address the most important areas for improvement that emerged from the survey. The more colleagues who do the check, the better KLM can make a plan of action, which allows us to respond to the needs of all our colleagues.

Privacy This survey runs on JOHAN BV's software. This is completely outside KLM. JOHAN BV is the partner selected by TNO for such surveys, KLM does not supply any data to JOHAN BV and only you have access to your data.

Are you ready for Techniek XXL?

The premiere of the 'You're ready for Techniek XXL' campaign was launched during the During the E&M Infosessions. This campaign shows that a technical job at KLM is more within reach than you might have initially thought.

There is a shortage of technical staff in the Netherlands and competition for talent is fierce. We looked at what makes E&M unique and appeals to anyone with a love of engineering: working with the largest and most beautiful technical company in the world, why settle for less.

We offer the very things that make our target group's heart beat faster. If you love tinkering with an engine, for example, how amazing would it be to do that with an aircraft engine with 70,000 hp, more than 70,000 LBS of thrust. So XXL bigger, but also XXL more precise or XXL more challenging. XXL recruitment through various channels Via radio, bus shelters at ROCs, YouTube, and other social channels, everyone with an affinity for engineering will be reached with this recruiting message in the coming months. In addition, special attention will be paid to all DIYers on the place where they orientate for their next job: YouTube. Pre-rolls for relevant technical tutorials call techies with tailor-made content to sign up for Techniek XXL. As of 12th June, we are live on YouTube, on 26th June we start the rollout on the radio, other socials, and Out Of Home (e.g. bus shelters, petrol stations).

Curious? Watch the video below (in Dutch) showing the making of and the expressions developed here!

Improving Airframe together

The Aiframe improvement plan is in full swing. In recent months, we've done a lot of research and preliminary work. Now each work stream, both local and overarching, has identified its ambition and initiatives. In total we have more than 60 initiatives, the first of which are already being implemented in Hangar 11 and at umbrella departments! A lot of work has been done and we have already achieved some successes.

Progress and Successes

Widebody Locally at the Widebody unit (WB), a number of improvements have been made. Among other things, we've developed a dashboard where daily operational KPIs are tracked. This dashboard is now used as the basis for the daily performance meeting. The aim is to standardise operational control and make timely adjustments. In addition, the dashboard helps to look back at the days before and learn which issues we need to pick up and can improve. Optimising Internal Logistics Internal Logistics is also using improvements to optimise. In addition to the standard and AOG material request, we want to add a third request flow to our logistics process, namely the critical request. This improvement will ensure that we better organise the material and logistics processes per type. Material requests will then be handled in a more focused manner with a suitable delivery time. DD reduction Finally, since 20th February, the DD Sweep Team and regular maintenance teams have been working hard to reduce the number of DDs from more than 1,000 in January, to 659 on 13th June. This is a huge achievement to which a lot of executive and support colleagues have contributed to. Our colleagues from Inflight Services and Flight Operations also greatly appreciate it. Focus for the coming period This coming period, we will continue to implement the various initiatives. Are you curious about examples of current initiatives or do you want to read more about the DD reduction and the Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) pilot? Then read the Check! June 2024.

AFI - KLM E&M Air Carrier Partner for 2024 MARPA EMEA Conference in Amsterdam

On 15-16 May the 2024 MARPA EMEA Conference took place in Amsterdam. Air France Industries and KLM Engineering & Maintenance were the Air Carrier Partner of this year’s conference.

The MARPA is a non-profit trade association that represents manufacturers of government-approved aircraft parts, i.e. PMA parts (Parts Manufacturer Approval). The usage of PMA parts can help to reduce cost, to solve supply chain issues, and to become more sustainable as repairing parts vs. scrapping them and buying new is more sustainable.

In order to increase knowledge in our organisation on the usage and advantages of using PMA parts MARPA hosted a workshop on 14 May in the Arena in building 411. Approx. 50 colleagues from Engineering, Procurement, Legal, Component Services, Airframe, Engine Services, EPCOR, Transavia, KLM Cityhopper, Air France Industries and Delta attended. There were 4 speakers from ADPma, HEICO, MARPA and Chromalloy who elucidated on PMA, legal aspects, intellectual property, and test and computation. The workshop was highly appreciated.

On 15 May we organised a facility tour through the Engine Shop and Hangar 11/12 for a group of 50 people from MARPA, PMA suppliers and other airlines. With help of Team Veldkamp, and Rénald Slagman and Robin van Wattingen from ES, we managed of offer a memorable experience with very positive feedback from the participants.

And on 16 May, the day of the conference itself, Benoît Rollier from Engineering, together with Pierre Rougier from AFI and Wim Vollenberg from the Repair Lab did the keynote opening speech. Colleagues from Engineering, Procurement and Repair Lab attended as well and joined the 1-on-1 meetings with the suppliers.

The role of AFI – KLM E&M as air carrier partner of the MARPA conference was organised by Frank Laurenssen and Wim Vollenberg from the Repair Lab. In case you would like to learn more, feel free to reach out.

The time has come: we finally get to fly outside with the drone!

14 June was a unique moment: the drone that we have had operational in Hangar 11/12 since September 2023 was now also allowed to fly outside, albeit in the form of an experiment, in one of the most restrictive airspaces in the Netherlands.

A great indication of how mature this technology has become. Thanks to all involved, we were able to establish through this experiment that we can now safely operate our drone flights outside. Why is flying outdoors so relevant? We’re stepping up and expect more drone assisted activities to be deployed in the coming year. Being able to fly outdoors allows KLM E&M to be more flexible and smarter with the limited and valuable set-up locations in our Hangars, we can reduce towing operations and their associated waiting times and further contribute to shorter ground times.

Next steps In 2 weeks we will also be conducting this experiment at Line Maintenance Schiphol on a Delta aircraft. After that we will conduct more experiments with this. In 2024 we hope to be able to convert our temporary permit to a full permit, so that we can continue our drone flights outdoors.

Sustainability roadmap: navigating towards a greener future!

As the climate is changing, so must we, to reach a greener future for all. We believe that transforming our practices towards more sustainable ones is our passport to this destination. However, the journey toward a greener future isn't one we complete overnight; it requires commitment and persistence. Our carefully crafted sustainability roadmap will guide each of our steps to reach this vital destination.

Sustainable heating, cooling, and energy solutions for our buildings Our journey begins with the very foundations of our operations – our buildings. We are focused on sustainable heating and cooling of our offices and hangars through a clear strategic plan developed by KLM Real Estate. By renovating existing buildings to lower energy demand and eliminating the use of natural gas, we are significantly reducing our carbon footprint. Additionally, in anticipation of an overloaded electricity grid and rising energy costs at Schiphol, we are investigating if we can expand our renewable energy production. Fossil-free operation In our pursuit of fossil-free production equipment, an asset phase-out plan is in the making. This plan dictates when fossil fuel consuming equipment will be phased-out or made sustainable before 2030. We are also electrifying our ground fleet. A step as important as the previous is improving our energy efficiency and our consumption. At Engine Services, the energy consumption of heavy equipment is being measured. This has already provided interesting insights and energy savings. Which contributes to lower operating costs. Another big driver is the fuel we consume in the engine test-cell. To counter these emissions, we are investigating using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for engine tests. Waste management KLM is committed to reducing residual waste by 50% compared to 2011. This is translated into a 5% decrease of residual waste year over year until 2030. At E&M we are taking the first steps to reduce residual waste by investigating our current residual waste stream and recycling system. With these insights we concluded that there’s a lot of room for improvement. The next step is to enable easy waste separation by putting the right bins in the right spot accompanied by clear information. Building a sustainability culture We understand achieving our sustainability goals requires the active engagement and participation of all employees. To achieve this, we are promoting an ecosystem mindset and providing tips and communication materials to inform, update, and engage our employees in our sustainability tracks. Through various events and workshops, we encourage our employees to embrace sustainable practices at work where possible. By raising awareness and fostering engagement, we are building a community that is committed to sustainability and eager to contribute to our shared goals.

Collaborating with suppliers and customers: reducing Scope 3 emissions Next to our efforts to achieve sustainable operations, we are reducing the emissions of our KLM fleet. By maintaining healthy aircraft, which have clean engines and exterior surfaces we keep performance deterioration at a minimum, reducing fuel consumption.

In 2023, extensive carbon accounting research was performed. This gave the insight that most of the emissions in the value chain of E&M are emitted by our suppliers. E&M is engaging with its largest suppliers to investigate how we can cooperatively decarbonize the supply chain.

Keep in mind that repairing and using used materials is more sustainable than scrapping and fabricating new components. In a world where we want to eliminate waste and become circular, repair is an indispensable ingredient. This makes the core of E&M a sustainable and future-proof business.

Successful E&M Internship Fair

On Wednesday 15th May, the E&M internship market took place at KLM E&M. It was a bustling day full of enthusiastic college and university students who came to Schiphol-East to discover the interesting internship assignments KLM E&M has to offer from September 2024.

More than 100 students interacted with hiring managers and internship supervisors and participated in several exciting activities.

The internship market offered a wide range of opportunities for students to learn and discover opportunities within KLM E&M. The viewfinder allowed them to explore images and information about KLM's sustainability efforts, while the technical insight workshop offered students the chance to further develop their skills in this area. There was also a teamwork challenge that challenged students to work together and test their problem-solving skills. And if that wasn't enough, there was also a competition where students could win fantastic prizes.

It was a successful event, and we would like to thank all colleagues who contributed to making this internship fair possible.

Good news: we will see many of these students again at E&M in September!

KLM E&M present at VRM Conferentie

On Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th June, KLM E&M was represented at the Vision, Robotics & Motion Conference in Den Bosch. Jochem Vliegenthart and Dylan Gouwentak from Engine Services' Makerspace are leading a project, together with external party CBoost, to automate inspections using robotics and artificial intelligence.

During the project, a setup is being built to use a camera with light elements mounted on a robotic arm to photograph parts in such a way that, for example, tiny cracks, dents and pits are immediately visible. A computer programme then uses artificial intelligence to search for and mark these damages. It will then be possible to measure the damages to check whether they still comply with the inspection manuals that determine whether the part is in limits, can be repaired, or needs to be scrapped. At the moment, the project is still mainly of a research nature.

At the conference, they not only explained the project and its preliminary results at their stand, they were also given 25 minutes of speaking time on a stage to explain the collaboration, the goal, and the results. In addition, they were also interviewed by Rocking Robots, a media platform that covers the news around robotics.

Take a look at the Makerspace If you’re interested in the developments Jochem, Dylan and their colleagues are working on, then you’re welcome to come and take a look at the Makerspace in Building 410 (Engine Services). They’re located in the office next to the canteen.

Check in with… Chris Artmanni

Every edition, we digitally meet a colleague within E&M. This time, we speak to Chris Artmanni, the new Technical Representative. Chris is 61 years old and has a wife and two children. His career started as a mechanic, but he progressed to various technical and managerial roles. This took him to different parts of the world, including most recently Lagos in Nigeria, where he served as Maintenance Manager at Line Maintenance International (LMI) until June 2024.Now Chris is back in the Netherlands, and we get an insight into his career and current position.

What was it like working in Lagos? "I worked in Lagos from February 2022 to June 2024. That time was challenging but also rewarding. My role as Maintenance Manager at LMI brought many logistical and safety challenges. Lagos is still very underdeveloped, with a lot of crime and poor infrastructure. You go back in time. I really liked the work itself at the airport. But the airport had regular electricity problems and security issues, still, it provided a great opportunity to build something and gain valuable experience. Our team consisted of 12 people."

How did you end up at KLM? "I started at KLM in 1985 as a mechanic. At the time, I didn't have much interest in aviation, but I enjoyed tinkering with the guys in the Hangar with the radio on. Over time, I wanted to develop myself further and trained as an AMT. That led to my first type plane in Seattle in 1999. I came back to the Hangar in 2005 and then took over my boss's function and started managing the operation. That suited me very well and then after 3 years I became a manager. In 2017, I went to Jakarta to work as a Customer Representative with customer GMF, a big customer of E&M. After a wonderful 5-year period, I eventually ended up as Maintenance Manager at LMI in Lagos, Nigeria. And now I have been officially hired as a Technical Representative at Airbus on behalf of LMI and KLM."

What is your favourite KLM destination or a destination you would still like to go to? "My favourite destination is Indonesia, where I lived and worked for KLM in Jakarta for five years. The country has a special place in my heart, I also met my wife there who studied English in Jakarta. My bucket list further includes Cape Town, South Africa, the Netherlands Antilles, and I would love to take a cruise to the Norwegian fjords."

Have you got another big hobby we should know about?

“Yes, golf has become my big hobby. I started playing it during my time in Jakarta, although I was interested in it earlier due to my representative role in a golf tournament organised by GMF. But now, I'm really addicted to the sport. I used to be more into football and running, but now golf has become my hobby."
