TonTalk

Dear colleagues, With 3 weeks to go, preparations for the E&M Infosessions by the Project Team are in full swing. We've already received almost 1,700 registrations, but there are still spots available, especially during the morning sessions on Wednesday 5 June and Thursday 6 June. So if you want to be there, sign up quickly via your personal email! Our new KLM CFO, Bas Brouns, recently joined us for an evening shift at our 3 Business Units.Together we visited our teams and he was able to experience for himself how work is done within E&M and what it involves. We also had a wonderful event for our pensioners and voluntary retirees last Thursday. At Claus in Hoofddorp, some 70 former colleagues gathered for an inspiring afternoon. Among others, Perwien Meriwani (SVP Operations/Airframe), Benoit Rollier (VP Engineering) and Willem Heuvelman (Plant Leader Component Repair) were present. A great time to share with them experiences and memories within KLM E&M. We also had informative meetings with the unions, explaining our operation improvement plans. It's important to keep them informed of our plans so that we can work together to build a future for KLM E&M.

Good developments are also visible with regard to DDs (Deffered Defects). The DDs have dropped from 1,100 (Jan 2024) to now approximately 700. Thanks to the KLM E&M (Sweep) teams who are working on this together with great motivation. Other good news, the May holidays went very well. Our KLM 5 must-win battles have paid off. There are always things that can and must be improved, but this May holiday KLM was able to carry almost 800,000 passengers. 95% of our passengers were through security within 9 minutes. Last week, 74% of our flights departed within 15 minutes of departure time and about 98% of our passengers with suitcases also made it to the transfer at Schiphol. This is partly due to the good joint preparation with our sector partners such as the Royal Schiphol Group and the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee. A big compliment to all our E&M employees who made this possible. I would like to conclude with a quote from Michael Jordan:

“Heart is what separates the good from the great."

Let's turn the passion that drives us into action and keep evolving. Together, we will build our E&M future.

Kind regards,

Ton Dortmans

Together we are improving Airframe

KLM's number of technical delays and cancellations have increased since 2019. This is not what we are used to, and also not what KLM is used to. That's why we are going to improve this together. McKinsey is helping us with these improvements. In collaboration with ourselves, they have written an improvement plan for Airframe.

The improvement plan has four objectives, which you can read below.

The approach

In our improvement plan, we focus on two types of improvements: local and overarching improvements.

1. Local improvements: Focused on changes per environment (hangar/line maintenance) without disrupting other operations. In this, we look at material availability (from our OEM suppliers), planning & work sequence, how we measure results and how we control, among other things.

2. Overarching improvements: Focused on Airframe-wide improvements. These are projects that affect multiple operations simultaneously, e.g., both Wide Body Hangar 11 and Narrow Body Hangar 12. In the image below, you can see the 14 overarching improvements, along with the DD Sweep team (Deferred Defects).

We're underway

Since 1st May, the improvement plan has been in progress. We are working in blocks of 12 weeks. Locally, we will start working on the improvements at Hangar 11. Globally, we are focusing on the following improvements:

  • Reducing the number of DDs,
  • Improving planning and work preparation,
  • Optimising internal logistics,
  • Optimising the Main Base Kit.

After these 12 weeks, we will start working on local improvements at Line Maintenance Schiphol and copy the improvements of Hangar 11 that we can use. Overall, we will focus on the following set of improvements. If you want to know more about the improvement plan, read May's Check!Special. Do you have any questions? Mail them to Hans Luijendijk (hans.luijendijk@klm.com).

KLM E&M Tech Center: 'Renovation of Hangar 10' subproject to visibly start soon

KLM E&M and KLM Real Estate & Facility Contracting (RE&FC) are working on a programme to invest in the preservation and major maintenance of several buildings in the Technical Area at Schiphol-East. This is necessary for optimal operation of KLM E&M and fits in with the vision to turn the Technical Area into a KLM E&M Tech Centre. This article explains the planning for the 'Renovation of Hangar 10' sub-project.

Over 65 years ago, Hangar 10 was commissioned by KLM for aircraft maintenance. In 2023, it was decided to completely renovate the hangar. Over the past few years, the project team, with input from Transavia 's Technical Department and KLM E&M, has been working hard on the investment and design of a new Hangar 10. Over the next 2.5 years, a full renovation is planned that will convert the new Hangar 10 into a sustainable hangar for Transavia and KLM E&M.

Meanwhile, all maintenance and logistics activities in Hangar 10 have been stopped and moved elsewhere. Subsequently, the building was handed over completely empty and transferred to RE&FC and contractor consortium.

The next 2.5 years will see the following phases in the renovation of Hangar 10:

1. Design. The preliminary design is almost complete. Definitive, Technical, and Implementation Design are planned for the next 12 months.

2. Site layout for redevelopment and demolition of low-rise buildings. From 16 May 2024, the construction area will be cordoned off on the E.L.T.A. and Westerkimweg sides. This will remove all parking spaces adjacent to Hangaar 10 in E.L.T.A. street. Both roads will remain available for traffic and access to Buildings 404/405/407 will be maintained.

3. Remediation and demolition of low-rise buildings. This phase will start in mid-May 2024 and is planned until October 2024.

4. Renovation facade, roof, hangar doors. This phase will start immediately after summer '24 and last until Q2 2025. During this period, the Hangar 10 platform will be unavailable for trial runs for approximately 7.5 months. A back-up plan is being developed for this purpose.

5. Construction of the MRO facilities for Transavia. This construction will start immediately after summer '24 and completion is planned no later than Q1 2026. Immediately afterwards, Transavia's F&TS will move from Hangar 5 to Hangar 10. The other Transavia business units housed in Hangar 5 will move to the Transport building.

5. Construction of the MRO facilities for KLM E&M. This schedule has not yet been finalised. KLM E&M's target is to commission the hangar by Q4 2026.

With the renovation of Hangar 10, Transavia and KLM are investing in a sustainable hangar. In doing so, KLM Group is lowering its CO2 footprint of ground operations and contributing to the ambition of a 'net-positive company' in 2050. For employees, this is an important step in the transformation of the current Technical Area into a future inspiring KLM E&M Tech Centre.

LEAP-ready: Test Cell renovation almost complete!

From 28th March 2024, the test cell closed for a period of around least seven weeks. The closure was necessary due to necessary maintenance and modifications we needed to make to the intake and 'thrust frame' to meet the specifications of the LEAP engines. This modification included modifications to the 'turning vanes', construction of the 'thrust frame' and installation of a 'velocity screen'.

The shutdown was divided into two phases. The first four weeks were dedicated to intensive maintenance of the test bed. The remaining three weeks were filled with correlating the test bench to GE's reference standard. Challenges in work due to weather conditions Although the original plan was to complete the work in the first week of May, the heavy wind gusts in the Netherlands, last week, brought some challenges. From a safety point of view, it wasn't possible to safely install the inlet grate.

As can be seen in the picture, the installation to the inlet grid of the Test Cell was completed in the first week of May. Correlation has currently started and is expected to be completed in week 21 (20th to 26th May). From then on, we expect to resume using the Test Cell, this time after thorough maintenance in which the Test Cell has been prepared for LEAP engine testing, among other things.

Have you submitted your idea for The Flight Challenge 2024 yet?

For the third year in a row, KLM and KLM Cityhopper (KLC) are taking part in The Flight Challenge with the aim of flying as sustainably as possible. We can't make things more sustainable on our own, which is why we're asking you to think along with us. Do you have an idea for a new initiative that we could use in this challenge? Then we would love to hear about it. You have until 22nd May to submit your idea using this form.

Preparations for The Flight Challenge are in full swing. The KLC flight will depart on 5th September to Valencia and the ICA flight is scheduled for 22nd October to Singapore. We want to operate both of these flights with the lowest possible carbon footprint.

This year is not only about new initiatives, but also about applying the experiences and lessons learned from the past two years. A great example is the trainers that our KLM and KLC colleagues can order as from this month for both the ground and on board.

Who knows, maybe your idea will also be put into practice for the next challenge. See here how you can contribute to the plans for The Flight Challenge of 2024. Don't hesitate: your contribution could make a difference!

Sustainability Spotlight: Scrap Plaza's contribution to recycling

In the era of climate crisis, the need for businesses to reduce CO2 emissions is more urgent than ever. That’s why at KLM Parts Trading's Scrap Plaza Department our mission is to be at the forefront of sustainable waste management! By utilizing innovative and environmentally responsible techniques we collect all types of scrap material, including various old metals, and meticulously sort them based on their metal type to facilitate the upcycling of precious metals. In this endeavor, we are fortunate to have important partners like Korlaar Soest, experts in ferrous and non-ferrous metals, who assist us in ensuring that the collected materials are further processed and reintroduced into the manufacturing cycle.

Τhe recycling process takes place on the right side of the illustrated map.

How does KLM Scrap Plaza reduce waste?

At KLM Scrap Plaza, prioritizing waste minimization and promoting resource efficiency is on the top of our daily agenda, achieved through various methods, including:

  • Reuse: Working products can be reused in their current state, reducing the need for new production. For instance, 21.6% of monitors were effectively reused in 2023.
  • Recycling: Materials, including metals, undergo recycling processes such as smelting in blast furnaces. Recycled metals are then used to produce new semi-finished products for manufacturing, completing the resource utilization cycle. In 2023, most materials, such as aluminum, iron, and plastics, achieved a 100% recycling rate.
  • Waste-to-Energy: Ash mixtures from waste-to-energy plants can be thoroughly cleaned and sorted to extract valuable metals. The residual gravel, stone, and silt can be reused in construction or infrastructure maintenance, minimizing residual waste.

KLM Scrap Plaza's Impact through Metal Recycling '23

The collaboration between KLM Scrap Plaza and Korlaar Soest has yielded remarkable results, thanks to the meticulous use of the Branch CO2 calculation tool to track emissions and avoided emissions in 2023. The recent annual report on metals and residual material recovery and recycling provides compelling insights into our efforts.

In terms of CO2 emissions, the disposal and processing of metals accounted for 139 tons. However, by recycling these metals as secondary raw material, we avoided a substantial 873 ton of CO2 emissions. Overall, the net reduction in CO2 emissions from emitted emissions minus avoided emissions from residual materials is a substantial 734 tons of CO2! To put it in perspective, this is equivalent to the CO2 absorption of 34,930 adult trees annually! This is particularly significant when considering that the annual waste emission from KLM E&M is 930 tons of CO2.

Why Metal Recycling Matters

Metal recycling is a powerful force for positive change. The production of new metals is a major source of pollution. Recycling offers a sustainable solution that benefits our environment and our communities. In the Netherlands alone, metal recycling saved 14,400 kilotons of CO2 emissions in 2021—equal to over half of our country's car emissions. Furthermore, metal recycling aligns perfectly with Europe's "green" economic objectives. By significantly reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions while increasing the use of secondary raw materials in production processes, recycling metals leads to a remarkable reduction in CO2 emissions—up to 90%, in fact. Moreover, the high recycling rate of metal contributes to the conservation of raw materials, ultimately reducing the risk of scarcity and ensuring a more sustainable future for us all.

Together with our partners, we strive to set new standards for sustainable waste management, continually seeking ways to improve and optimize our processes for the benefit of the environment and our stakeholders.

Let’s Connect – with Marjan Rintel

On Friday 26th April, our CEO, Marjan Rintel visited KLM Engine Services. During the E&M Infosessions 2023, she struck up a conversation with Stuart Baker (All-round Mechanic) who took his bold step and invited Marjan to meet Team Engines. "Just send an email and we'll see when this is possible," Marjan said. So, Stuart sent a mail. Moments later, word came that Marjan was coming by on 26th April, time for a Let's Connect event! "Marjan obviously needs to meet the whole Engines team", and she did!

What was on the programme?

It was a full but relaxed programme. Marjan visited; ANCR2, EDA, Engineering, MRO, Accessories, and Commercial Operations. In the departments, a number of colleagues were on hand to tell Marjan more about themselves and their experience with Engine Services. Great conversations ensued, there was laughter and, in some departments, Marjan joined the operations! At ANCR2 and MRO people worked hard, also by Marjan. Among other things, Marjan took the Engine Academy test for new colleagues. And with success, as Marjan received her certificate at the end of the morning.

The morning ended in the canteen with an interactive workshop on Generational Differences, provided by Pia Naber. A large number of employees from different departments joined in. There was room to ask Marjan a question.

Marjan concluded her visit by stating that she thought this was a great program. A great compliment to Team Engines Services.

Check in with… Mark Smit

Each edition, we digitally meet a colleague working within E&M. This time, we had the opportunity to interview Mark Smit. He is 48 years old and lives in Limmen with his wife, two children and their new puppy Lotje. About 23 years ago, Mark started at KLM E&M as a mechanic. Since last September, he has been working as Team Leader Operations in Hangar 12.

Did you always know you wanted to go into the aviation industry?

"Actually, I didn't. I studied mechanical engineering and initially started working in the installation field. My grandfather worked at KLM for 40 years, he had a real Blue Heart. So I came here as a little boy with my binoculars in Hangar 9 still to watch planes in the distance. At some point I thought, maybe that's a good place to start, and that's how i started as a mechanic in Hangar 12.

What are the biggest challenges at the moment?

"I have a team of 96 employees in seven teams and we've just made a change so we are in the midst of revising working practices and working arrangements; who does what. So, for everyone this is new and will take some getting used to. From a large unit where all aircraft types were maintained, we have broken up into a Narrow Body and a Wide Body unit. The biggest challenge is to make sure everyone feels heard and supported, and that we facilitate them in the work they do, and that everyone ends up enjoying going to work here. You spend a lot of time here and it's always better to enjoy going there. When I greet colleagues in the morning with a smile on their face and can do nice things for their careers, that energises me. I find that really great to do."

What is your favourite KLM destination or a destination you would still like to go to?

"Bonaire is my favourite destination. I was an avid diver, and I am also a diving instructor and have made many beautiful dives there. Now with children, I don't often get around to doing that. Other than that, I would like to go to Thailand or Hong Kong again. My wife is a flight attendant at KLM, and I met her on board a flight to Bonaire, our first date was a test dive there and she found that very scary. When we didn't have children, I went on one of her flights to Hong Kong. America and the west side are also high on my list, when my children are a bit older, I'd like to take a long trip there with my family."

Do you have any other hobby we should know about?

"We live close to the sea. I love walking long stretches in the dunes and on the beach. And I also enjoy going to the beach with my children."

Lotje

Back in time with KLM E&M retirees: a day full of nostalgia and fond memories

Tuesday 7th May was a day of celebrations for KLM E&M retirees who retired in 2023. Over 65 retirees and their partners/other attendees gathered at Claus in Hoofddorp for a day full of nostalgia and fond memories.

The day started with coffee and some goodies, after which the attendees were treated to beautiful films of KLM's history. They were also given a presentation and film on KLM and E&M by our EVP Ton Dortmans.

But surely the highlight of the day was when former colleagues with the most years (between 46 and 48 years) of service were called on stage. They spoke enthusiastically about their time and work at KLM and were put in the spotlight with a bouquet of flowers. It was wonderful to see how much love and passion there still is for the job and for the company.

Of course, there was also time for relaxation and conviviality. A delicious lunch and drinks were enjoyed, and people were able to catch up with old acquaintances and new faces.

We look back on a great day with great stories from the retirees.
