Dear colleagues, During the E&M Infosessions in June 2023, I shared with you the E&M vision for the KLM E&M Tech Center. KLM E&M and KLM Real Estate are working together on an investment program for the sustainability and major maintenance of buildings on the Technical Area. This is necessary to optimize E&M's operation and transform the Technical Area into a KLM E&M Tech Center. Between 2024 and 2028, construction and renovation projects will take place, with multiple initiatives running simultaneously in 2024. More information can be found in this E&M Scope, and updates on progress will be shared as they become available. During the E&M Infosessions and in various conversations with the Management Teams of the different Business Units, you have expressed your wishes regarding the existing MicroMarkets. After a process in which members of the Division Council, Team Spirit Councils of all Business Units, CILs, CLs, Facilicom, and Real Estate & Facility Contracting surveyed your wishes, E&M Management (EMT) has decided to replace the MicroMarkets with new Food Courts at five locations. The assortment of the Food Courts offers a diverse range of fresh, cold, and hot dishes, as well as ‘Service with a smile’ by an all-round Facilicom team. The Food Courts offer a ‘grab and go’ assortment and these are open 24/7. There are also plans to adjust the look & feel of the company restaurants. The new Food Courts will be officially opened on 26 March. On 8 February, KLM E&M participated in the YouTube series ‘Omscholen met Filemon,’ in which Filemon Wesselink carried out maintenance work on a midshaft at Engine Services. Team Sourcing wants to profile KLM E&M as an attractive employer to inspire newcomers and career changers to come and work for us. The episode is expected to last between 8 and 10 minutes and will be shared within KLM E&M once it is online. I would like to express my thanks to all colleagues who contributed to this episode. You have contributed to the profiling of KLM E&M as an attractive technical employer. Therefore, starting this week, we will establish DD sweep teams. Unlike before, the sweep team will not only exist in execution but we will also free up people in the entire organization. Think of materials, engineering, planning, MCC, and the management team. It is important that in addition to the extra problem-solving capacity we create, all regular processes continue to do their best to solve as many Deferred Defects as possible. This requires an effort from all of us. A special category of complaints are the defects that affect cabin crew and passenger experience. More on this in the E&M Scope. Additionally, Component Services is taking action to improve performance so that we can deliver the necessary components on time. For this purpose, we have set up the Operation in Order program, consisting of five tracks: Internal Repair shops, Vendor Repair, US Flow, Open Request Customer, and Program track O3 Freight Forwarding Data. In addition to these internal improvements, we continue to put pressure on our suppliers and OEMs. On 12, 14 and 15 March, the KLM Board of Directors will be present at various locations for ‘Let's Connect’ sessions. During these sessions, you will be taken through KLM's priorities, how we are addressing operational challenges, and what our future looks like. If you want to attend one of the sessions, please register via this link to the KLM NewsApp.

KLM E&M Tech Center: Renovation of Hangar 10, Replacement of Building 404 and Renovation of Hangar 11/12 Platform

For several months, a team of colleagues within KLM E&M and KLM Real Estate has been working on a program for necessary investments in the sustainability and major maintenance of various buildings on the Technical Area. This program is required to continue to execute E&M's current and future operations optimally and is part of E&M's vision to make the Technical Area a KLM E&M Tech Center. Timing From 2024 to 2028, various construction and renovation projects will take place in the Technical Area. Multiple initiatives will run simultaneously in 2024. Construction has already started on an extension to Hangar 14 where the future housing of Building 425 Hall A will be located.

Phases of Renovation and New Construction in the Technical Area Below is a brief overview of the different phases that will take place from 2024:

  • Phase 1: The renovation of Hangar 10 will begin for a period of over 2.5 years. Hangar 32 will be leased for 36 months to accommodate the Airframe overflow during the renovation, which is otherwise handled by Hangar 10. Once completed, Hangar 10 will house KLM E&M (Bay 1) and Transavia (Bay 2). The work on Hangar 10 will begin in early Q2 2024. Hangar 10 Platform will remain available for parking Narrow Body aircraft during the entire construction period and for Narrow Body aircraft testing until 1 July 2024.
  • Phase 2: • We plan to close Building 404 in 2027 and house the current occupants in a newly constructed office building attached to Hangar 10. The offices to replace Building 404 will be integrated into the Hangar 10 design. Building 404 no longer meets the requirements. This chosen solution is not only a cheaper solution than renovation or separate new construction, but it is also faster to implement because Hangar 10 is being renovated simultaneously.
  • Phase 3: The operationalization of Hangar 4. In this phase, the Hangar 11/12 Platform will be renovated. Without intervention, this will lead to a capacity shortage of hangar positions. In addition to the previously mentioned Hangar 10 and Hangar 32, additional capacity must be available. This will also be achieved by the reoperation of Hangar 4. Which aircraft checks will take place where, are yet to be determined.

As updates become available regarding a construction and/or renovation project of the KLM E&M Tech Center, you will be kept informed.

New Food Court concept at KLM E&M: something for every taste!

Great news for all E&M staff: after listening to an E&M-wide sounding board group, consisting of members of the Divisional & Team Spirit Councils, KLM E&M has decided to replace the current MicroMarkets for brand new Food Courts. This modification comes in response to employees' wishes about the existing MicroMarkets. The festive opening of the new Food Courts at five locations within KLM E&M will be held on 26th March.

Employees have been heard During COVID, the company restaurants were closed and the MicroMarket concept was introduced, but it soon became clear that this concept did not meet the needs of employees. This was expressed both by employees during the E&M Infosessions in June 2023, and by the focus group. The management of E&M (EMT) recognised this need and an improvement process started after working group was launched for this issue.

First successes can already be seen During the trajectory, members of the Divisional Council, Team Spirit Councils of all divisions, CILs, CLs, Facilicom and Real Estate & Facility Contracting made an inventory of your needs. They visited other KLM company restaurants and sampled meals from different suppliers. This has already led to several improvements. A monthly 'special' is offered, the MicroMarkets range has been expanded to include freshly prepared sandwiches, more Halal products are available, and coffee machines (for a fee) have been installed at several locations. Food Courts: Service with a smile And the moment we have all been waiting for: the management of E&M has accepted the working group's proposal! From 26th March, all MicroMarkets at the five locations within KLM E&M will be converted into Food Courts, offering a diverse range of fresh, cold and hot dishes.

A Food Court is open 24/7 and offers a 'grab and go' assortment. In addition, at set times and days, there is a 'Service with a smile' offer. A Facilicom employee is then present to prepare the daily offer. New look & feel Besides converting the MicroMarkets into Food Courts, the look and feel of the company restaurants will also be changed immediately. A few years ago, the company restaurant at Hangar 11 was equipped with new furniture. Recently, the company restaurant of Building 425 was redesigned. The company restaurants of Hangaar 14 and Building 410 will also be upgraded. 26 March festive opening Of course, we do not want to let this great milestone pass by unnoticed. That is why there will be a festive opening on 26th March! Further information about the opening of the Food Courts will follow soon.

In short, KLM E&M has listened carefully to its employees' wishes and is fulfilling them with the introduction of the new Food Courts. Soon all E&M staff will be able to enjoy a diverse range of fresh, cold, and hot dishes and 'Service with a smile' by an all-round Facilicom team. Good to know: even after the opening of the Food Courts, the working group will continue to meet regularly to scrutinise the range and make additions and adjustments where possible.

Approach to long-standing cabin defects

The operational performance of KLM is closely linked to that of KLM Engineering & Maintenance. The challenges we face, including a disrupted supply chain, ongoing issues with global parts delivery times, and a tight labor market, directly and indirectly affect our operation and therefore KLM. This includes maintenance delays, resulting in technical cancellations and reduced fleet availability. However, KLM customers and cabin crew have also been facing a high number of complaints (Deferred Defects) in the cabin, leading to dissatisfaction. Examples include broken 787 ovens or sagging Premium Comfort tables.

More stable operation KLM is making every effort to achieve a more stable operation, with various measures already taken. For example, we have increased reserve capacity in the fleet, and we took some recent necessary interventions at Airframe to contribute to a stable KLM operation and the reduction of non-performance costs for KLM. Approach top 10 cabin defects Persistent cabin defects are causing significant inconvenience for Inflight Services cabin crew. To address these problems, KLM E&M has developed a plan in collaboration with Inflight Services and Fleet Services. There are regular meetings where each cabin defect is discussed individually. Action points are identified, responsibilities assigned, and progress monitored. The focus is mainly on the top 10 cabin defects that most hinder the work of cabin colleagues. If necessary, short and long-term solutions are distinguished. The current top 10 cabin effects are: • Ovens

• Non-blocked seats with defects

• Sagging 787 Premium Comfort tables

• Defective airchillers on the 787

• Defective toilets

• Defective sink drains

• Peeling paint on PCUs WBC seats 787

• Worn carpet

• Wifi complaints

• Non-functioning curtains (777)

We believe it is essential that our cabin colleagues' work runs smoothly, and they can perform their duties well. We believe that with this approach, we can reduce the inconvenience for Inflight Services cabin crew and provide our customers with a Memorable Experience.

Filemon Wesselink retrains at KLM E&M

On 8th February 2024, a film crew visited Engine Services (ES) for the filming of the YouTube series 'Retraining with Filemon'. In this series, Filemon Wesselink went to work performing maintenance work on a midshaft under the guidance of ES colleague Nicky van Raaphorst.

Strive to be the first choice for potential target audiences KLM E&M offers a great working environment for technical professionals, but unfortunately we are not always at the forefront of potential target groups' minds. Team Sourcing is determined to bridge this gap and raise our profile as an attractive employer so that we can fulfil our need for technical staff and attract new talents to strengthen our teams. To inspire both newcomers and career switchers to come and work for us, Team Sourcing has decided to have KLM E&M participate in the YouTube series 'Retraining with Filemon'. Craftsmanship and innovation meet Engine Services was a great place for the filming, being the place where craftsmanship and innovation meet. An important part of the episode was the reverse job application, in which colleague Hasher Ahmadi, as Plant Leader Repair, spoke to Filemon and showed him why Engine Services and KLM E&M are such great employers. Still some patience until the final result The film crew filmed throughout the day and we can't wait to see the final result! The video is expected to last between 8 and 10 minutes and will of course be shared within KLM E&M as soon as the episode is online.

We are proud to have been part of this YouTube series and we hope it will inspire new talents and career switchers to choose us.

Thanks to all colleagues who contributed to this episode!

KLM E&M's Cabin Academy

Meet KLM E&M's Cabin Academy - the perfect place to develop your skills as a cabin or wheel shop mechanic. Our instructor Tomas Koelewijn has been with us since 2019 and has recently worked hard to make the layout of our new cabin classroom (the E&M Cabin Academy) as realistic as possible.

Thomas enthusiastically explains, "Thanks to the FICAB modification in Bay 1 of Hangar 14, we have had the opportunity to get parts from the cabin. As a result, we have now been able to get some side wall panels, a lavatory door, economy class seats, and some more loose components. Working with E&M colleagues Ronald and Dirk-Jan, we managed to move these to GK in a short time. If you now take a look in room 002 on the ground floor of Building 411, you will now see a beautifully built-up side wall and a beautiful set of chairs standing at the right pitch."

Training is now on offer for the Economy 737, 777, and 787, MIQ Premium Comfort Class and World Business Class seats 777 (coming later this year), 787-9, 787-10, and a demo seat for the A330. In the future, all parts for the A350 and probably another MIQ for the A330, will be added to the E&M Cabin Academy. Perfect environment for hands-on training Thanks to this newly refurbished classroom, manuals training, and practical exercises fit together perfectly. Our LVL 1 training has been updated to better suit today's needs. This ensures that trainees return to their workplace with a good basic knowledge of cabin operations. Sign up! If you haven't had your seat training yet, sign up for our training courses via MyKLM soon. Perhaps we'll see you soon in our E&M Cabin Academy!

In-house repair resulting in a saving of 70,000 euros.

Most colleagues know that leather cushions on the 787-9 business class seat can wear out due to frequent use. This is also called the “triangular cushion”. When necessary, these are replaced with new cushions. Due to the sharply increased prices and delivery problems, the initiative has arisen for "in house" repairs in the H14 cabin shop of one of these cushions.

Results so far 13 cushions have now been repaired with this repair, a new cushion currently costs around 5,800 euros. The repair of these cushions has already resulted in cost savings of more than 70,000 euros. This collaboration between different departments within E&M shows that when colleagues and departments find each other, great successes can be achieved. In this case, where necessity was turned into a virtue, it turned out to be a success story. The departments involved are in contact with each other and will find it easier to find each other for similar initiatives in the future.

Mapping our GHG emissions

KLM has a strong ambition to decarbonise the ground operation by 2030. To create insights on the emissions in the whole E&M value chain, a collaborative effort was made between AFI and KLM E&M and led by Accenture. Through this collaboration, the GHG emissions over 2022 were mapped for KLM E&M and AFI.

Of course, the important part of this research are the results for Engineering & Maintenance. They give E&M actionable insights into our emissions and their origins. These can be used to implement measures and help monitor their effectiveness.

Mapping the GHG emissions of the whole value chain of E&M is also referred to as “Carbon Accounting”. Carbon Accounting will be mandatory annually and must be auditable. In fact, E&M is the first division, to have all emissions mapped out. The results of 2022 can be reproduced internally on a yearly basis. Therefore E&M complies with national and international regulations.

Let’s take a closer look!

As we previously reported, emissions can be broken down into scope 1, 2 and 3.

The vast majority of our emissions come from Aero Purchasing, or the purchasing and procurement of aircraft related parts. This category represents 81% of our total emissions. A lot of this has to do with the nature of mining and production of the metals and the corresponding emissions.

The second biggest category is facility management, which includes the warming, cooling and electricity consumption in the offices and hangars. Facility management represents 5,95% of our total emissions.  Emissions related to equipment other than our ground fleet or vehicles are also included.

The next source of emissions within Scope 1 is Engine testing. These tests represent the fuel usage in both on- and off-wing testing.

Next steps As you have learned the majority of emissions are related to the purchasing of aircraft components. These emissions fall within Scope 3. KLM does not currently have a target (yet) for Scope 3 emissions. The Dutch government also hasn’t created industry targets for Scope 3. However, recently several regulations were taken into effect such as the mandatory reporting of Scope 3 emissions and a carbon tax for importing certain products (such as steel) from outside the EU. Procurement is working on a sustainable procurement strategy and is in the process of engaging with major supplies to decarbonize the supply chain.

As you now know Facility management is the biggest source of emissions within Scope 1. These emissions have the target of Zero Emissions by 2030 and therefore have high priority - E&M is taking action on this topic via several measures. First of all, together with KLM Real Estate, an investigation is conducted on how to heat our buildings without the use of natural gas. On the other hand, fossil fuel usage in the equipment and ground fleet is identified. A phase-out plan for equipment using fossil fuels needs to be created, while the electrification of the personnel vehicles ground fleet is making steady progress and is expected to be finished by the end of 2025.

Engine testing is the next big source of Scope 1 emissions. These can be reduced by using sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) when testing. E&M is currently investigating what is needed to use SAF within the operational domain.

The results give us more insight on where our emissions are generated and also a method to monitor results. Next to that, the results of 2022 can be reproduced internally on a yearly basis. Therefore E&M complies with national and international regulations. The research also confirms that we are on the right track. E&M already performs projects on every big source of emissions, these results empower these projects. You will read more about these projects in future communication.

Making KLM E&M fleet more sustainable

KLM has committed to the ambitious target of reducing CO2 emissions from ground operations to zero by 2030, KLM E&M is also contributing to this. Within KLM E&M, we are striving for a more sustainable fleet, with our target being to electrify all vehicles by 2025. This target reflects our commitment to eco-friendly mobility and helps reduce the environmental impact of our fleet. By switching entirely to electric vehicles, we are aiming for a cleaner and more sustainable future for our organisation.

At E&M, we have made significant progress in making our commercial vehicles more sustainable. There are currently 100 cars at Schiphol-Centre, 71 of which are already electric. In addition, 11 electric cars have been ordered, meaning that the percentage of electrified vehicles at Schiphol-Centre will rise to 82% by the first quarter of 2024.

At Schiphol East, we currently have 51 cars, 11 of which are electric. In December 2023, 5 diesel cars were replaced by 5 electric cars and 16 electric cars have been ordered and will be delivered in the first quarter. This increases the percentage of electric vehicles within Schiphol-East to 63%.

We are on track to achieve our goal of a fully electric fleet by the end of 2025.

Access to the Technical Area for employees with disabilities

KLM E&M is committed to making the Technical Area accessible to employees with disabilities. For example, these employees have a specially allocated parking space on the premises. But visitors with disabilities are not forgotten either. They can be picked up at the security gate if they come by public transport and if they come by car, they can park in a general disabled parking space.

These parking spaces are distributed in different locations on the site, and we are working hard to provide even more parking spaces in the future. In this way, we want to ensure that people with disabilities also have easy access to the Technical Area. The available parking spaces are divided between the following locations:

· OCC: 1 general disabled parking space

· Building 411: 1 general disabled parking space

· Building 410: 3 general disabled parking spaces

· Building 404: 2 general disabled parking spaces on the Ringvaart side

· Hangar 14: 2 general disabled parking spaces

When visitors or employees with disabilities need assistance to get from the car park to their destination, the visitor's contact person can meet them at the car park. This is how we ensure that everyone with a disability has a pleasant and carefree experience at the Technical Area.

In the Spotlight…Team Exterior Cleaning Airframe

In this section, every month a different VP within E&M puts a colleague or team in the spotlight with an unexpected visit. This month, Perwien Meriwani, SVP Airframe & Operations, puts the team Exterior Cleaning in the spotlight.

Perwien enthusiastically says: "After years of lagging behind in cleaning the fleet, the current Exterior Cleaning team has managed to get (almost) the entire KLM NB & WB fleet completely clean as agreed with Fleet Services. I'm proud of this extraordinary achievement by the, almost completely renewed, team. Thanks to the good cooperation and the way we work, not only we, but also our customers and the passengers see a clean blue machine leaving the Hangar and arriving at the gate. With this, the Exterior Cleaning team contributes to KLM's bottom line, and an improved Customer Experience score. I am happy to put this team in the spotlight, fully deserved!"

TEAMING: MEF gives office garden an upgrade

Discover inspiring and hybrid workplaces

The office garden at Material, Equipment & Facilities (MEF) has undergone a major metamorphosis. Post-COVID, it was difficult for employees to meet, and the old office space was uninspiring, grey and drab, and unsuitable for the hybrid form of working. The team identified the need for change during several TEAMING sessions and a plan emerged to give the office space a contemporary look

Space for focus and meeting The old corner desks have given way to functional workstations that meet KLM standards. There is now space for focus and meeting. The old kitchen has also been moved to the front of the office to reduce nuisance from the cold and vermin. This has also immediately remedied the walk-in of 'coffee guests', who sometimes distracted team members. Besides individual workstations, there are now collaborative workstations that they can use in smaller groups, without having to block off a larger meeting room. The plan and drawings were made, and they set to work.

Uniform workspaces From all sorts of places in the organisation, they managed to find height-adjustable desks, giving the furniture a second life. Also, all workstations are now equipped with proper desk chairs, 2x 22" screens, a wireless mouse and keyboards. With this, the team has now created uniform workstations.

The kitchen was relocated and completely cast in the look and feel of the office. The KLM house style colours were applied to the new meeting tables at the 'MEF BAR' and the collaborative workstations, among others. The blue, brown and orange combined with wood accents gives a business-like look. Complemented by the green of a large number of new plants, this gives the office peace and brings it to life. Teamwork makes the dream work The team came up with the ideas themselves, made a plan, assembled and installed the furniture, made the cabinet conversions, bought and potted the plants, collaborated with fellow departments, and the monitored progress. The result is an office they are proud of. Here they can work in a great atmosphere while also receiving suppliers, customers and/or new colleagues with peace of mind. With this, MEF has had an upgrade to a contemporary setting!

KLM Smoke-free: interview with Mike Gieske and Mike Schagen

As is well known, a smoking ban has been in force for all buildings at Schiphol-East since 1st January 2022. KLM is an employer that values the health of its employees and therefore contributes to a 'Smoke-free policy'. In this E&M Scope edition, we interview Mike Gieske and Mike Schagen. Both working in Hangar 11 as Exterior Cleaners and who have both stopped smoking for some time.

What inspired you to quit smoking, and how did you go about it? Mike G: "I smoked for about 10 years. One day I became physically unwell from a cigarette, I got nauseous, and it suddenly bothered me. From one day to the next, I quit. I didn't see the point anymore. I actually grew out of it naturally mostly because I found it disgusting."

Mike S: "When the Smoke-free policy was tightened from KLM E&M on November 1st, I made the decision to quit. It had been in my head for some time to quit, but this was the deciding factor. I smoked for about 40 years in total and smoked 1 pack of rolling tobacco every 2 days." What did you find most difficult about quitting smoking? Mike G: "The most difficult I find are the times when I'm stressed or enjoying a drink on festive occasions."

Mike S: "The beginning is difficult; you need a lot of discipline and perseverance to quit. Now that I've got through that, it's only better." Did you pick up other habits after quitting smoking? Mike G: "Yes, I started eating a lot more, unfortunately. I gained at least 20 kg. You end up looking for another occupation and my hobby is cooking."

How has quitting smoking affected your health? Mike G: "Less coughing, and i can smell and taste more. I also had a baby two years ago and that's also a motivation to not start again." As you may know, KLM has had a 'Smoke-free policy' throughout Schiphol East since early 2022, was that also one of the motivations for you to quit smoking? Mike G: "I did know it was coming and that helped me, I think it's a very good initiative. Because of this you are not 'invited' to smoke. I used to work in Hangaar 14 and there were bus shelters everywhere, everyone was constantly smoking. That makes the hurdle to start smoking a lot smaller. So, I'm glad the policy has changed now."

Mike S: "As I mentioned earlier, when KLM E&M started enforcing from 1st November 2023, it was really the deciding factor for me to quit. Nobody feels like hassle from their employer." What has it benefited you now that you have quit? Mike S: "I am especially happy that now I don't have to sacrifice my time during my breaks to go outside. I can stay cosy inside the canteen with my colleagues." Would you encourage others to quit smoking and if so why? Mike G: "Yeah sure, it's just not good for you. I so often tell people and colleagues: just stop! Not everyone listens to this, unfortunately. I understand it's hard, it's often not only a physical addiction, but also a habitual addiction."

Mike S: ''I already encourage others and I would advise everyone to also use the help that KLM offers. I quit cold turkey. If I can do it, I'm sure everyone can!''
