Dear Colleagues,

As announced in this month’s Scope Special, Coen Swaanenburg will be appointed VP Information Management Office (IMO) E&M with effect from 1 October 2023. At KLM Engineering & Maintenance (E&M), he will be responsible for improving E&M’s performance through process optimisation and IT applications. In this capacity, Coen succeeds Ramon Molier, who started as VP Transformation Programmes in the KLM Strategy, Sustainability & Transformation Office as of 1 August 2023. For more information, read the Scope Special. We would like to wish Coen all the very best in his new position at KLM E&M.

We look back with pride on three successful days during Jack’s Racing Day at the TT Circuit in Assen. The KLM E&M Ambassadors team attended to recruit new colleagues and it was a great success. The team maintained lively discussions with enthusiastic onlookers and once again put E&M squarely on the map as a high-tech employer. Hopefully, we will soon be welcoming new colleagues to E&M. Special thanks to the KLM E&M Ambassadors for their commitment and enthusiasm during the event. Without you, these days would not have been so successful. And, as mentioned during the E&M Info sessions, we contribute to KLM’s vision with our strategy at E&M: “Pioneering to become a frontrunner in sustainable aviation”. We do so by investing in solutions for our customers and colleagues (Run a great airline for our customers and our people), by investing in technology and applying it intelligently (Create technological advancement), and by making our company and products more sustainable in all areas (Transform to a net positive company). In the period ahead, we will communicate regularly within E&M about our sustainability journey, and how E&M contributes substantially to KLM’s three ambitions and sustainability goals. You can read more about this in this edition of Scope.

Following on from this story and under the name AeroDelft, 40 students from the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) will spend a year building an aircraft to run on emission-free hydrogen. Within the context of supporting this initiative, KLM gave the students a tour of our Hangar in the Technical Area last Wednesday. NH Nieuws was also present to report. It’s great that KLM forms part of this partnership, contributing to knowledge exchange in the field of aircraft technology. Also on 28 and 29 August, KLM and industry-wide association Electric Flying Connection (EFC) provided 18 guests a unique glimpse into the future of flying. They were given a trial lesson in electric flight by instructors from the E-Flight Academy in a Pipistrel Velis Electro. You can read more about this below.

Finally, an update on the KLM employee survey, which took place from mid-May to July 2023. The good news: 52% of E&M’s employees took the time to complete the survey. We’re very happy about this. The findings are now available at a team level. Our managers can also see the team findings (providing there was a response from five or more colleagues) in their dashboard. We also received reports about E&M and the bigger units. A lot has been said, so it’s important to start looking closely at what the findings mean. We will take our time to do so and, in the coming period, we will gather insight into the findings and come up with a proposal for roll-out across the departments.

Best regards,
