Outstation: JNB/TT
Line Maintenance International is responsible for aircraft maintenance at some 50 KLM outstations and for 150 other partners and customers around the world. Colleague Mark de Bruyn is Maintenance Manager at the JNB/TT outstation in Johannesburg. He gives us an inside look at what goes on at this outstation.

How would you describe Johannesburg outstation? “Johannesburg (JNB/TT) is a busy station in the financial heart of South Africa. Our team consists of a Maintenance Manager, 8 engineers and 7 mechanics. We handle a wide variety of widebody aircraft, including B744, B777, B787, A350 and A380. Our customers include Singapore Airlines, Air France, Martinair, Cargolux, LAN Airlines, Quantas, United Airlines, FedEx, and, of course, KLM. Currently, we process 46 flights a week.” What makes the Johannesburg station and team so special? “Our team consists of great people who make the work fun. They're always willing to help our customers and maintain a positive relationship with them." Are there any unique opportunities or projects specific to this location? “There are many opportunities to expand our customer base. With more training and manpower, we can achieve great things. We have successfully promoted several mechanics to engineer. This shows resilience and perseverance from our team.”
Were there any notable achievements recently? “We’ve had several AOG situations recently. For example, Air France had an aborted take-off due to a faulty bulk cargo door indication, resulting in multiple blowouts. The team resolved this with determination and hard work. SQ also had a faulty engine-driven hydraulic pump, which grounded the aircraft from Saturday to Tuesday. Despite long hours and hard work, the final outcome was not as hoped, but it showed our commitment and willingness to help the customer. In addition, we’ve promoted a number of mechanics to engineer, which is a considerable achievement.” Why do you think Johannesburg deserves attention? “Johannesburg is a hardworking station where everyone has the same goal: getting planes off safely. What makes Johannesburg unique is our greatest asset, the people who work there. They create a great working environment with their positivity and good interpersonal relations. Personally, I think we are the crown jewel of KLM LMI!”
