E&M in action
New cooperative initiative with Boeing: Improved Chemical Bin Management
At the beginning of July, we signed a new contract with Boeing. From now on, Boeing will be running the Chemical Bin Management programme for KLM E&M, which means they will take over managing the chemicals in our “secure cabinets”.
What does this entail? Boeing will take responsibility for the local storage of chemicals, ensuring sufficient stock levels of predetermined chemicals. Minimum and maximum stock levels have been defined for each cabinet. Currently, according to the old contract, these chemicals are delivered within two days. When stocks reach the minimum level, Boeing ensures replenishment up to the maximum level. What is unique about this new arrangement is that there are no longer minimum order sizes; it is now possible to order single items. Local stock managers retain control over which items and quantities they need. This keeps the composition and volume of local stock flexible and adaptable to current needs.

Shelf-life insight Boeing will also closely monitor the expiry dates of chemicals. Products approaching their expiry date that should no longer be used will be replaced in a timely manner. This process is supported by a specially developed Boeing app, which provides insight into the location of items in the technical area and at Schiphol Centre, and shows consumption for each item, for each cabinet and overall. A handy colour scheme will indicate when the expiry date of a particular item is approaching. Benefits of the new process We expect the revamped process to deliver numerous benefits. KLM E&M will gain better and more up-to-date insight into the use of chemicals, which will increase stock management efficiency. Cooperation will also contribute to achieving our sustainability goals by reducing waste. The project group will provide regular updates on the progress of this project in the near future.
