E&M and our people

Meryem Essellami
Check in with… Meryem Essellami
In this column, we digitally introduce a new E&M colleague. This time, we spoke to Meryem Essellami, Chief of Staff for EVP Ton Dortmans. Meryem is 35 years old and lives in Haarlem. Her career started at Aigle Azur in France, but is now fully grounded in the Netherlands with her appointment here.
Meryem, can you introduce yourself? “My name is Meryem. I was born in Morocco and moved to France when I was 17 to pursue my studies in aircraft engineering. I obtained my master’s degree in 2012. I started my professional career in 2022 at an airline called Aigle Azur, where I worked as an Airframe Engineer and then Powerplant & Procurement Engineer. This gave me an initial grounding in the technical and operational aspects of an airline. I then joined Air France Industries and took on different positions: Engine Customer Manager, Technical Sales Manager and Sales Manager. Each position offered new challenges and opportunities for growth, which I enjoyed immensely.
In December 2023, I began a new adventure at KLM E&M as Chief of Staff. This post is a great mix of strategic oversight and practical problem solving, perfect for someone with my personality. I am driven by action and results and thrive in fast-paced environments where challenges turn into opportunities. Since I left Morocco, my journey has been defined by this particular mindset: consistently transforming challenges into opportunities.
In my spare time, I have a passion for exciting sports such as kite-surfing, wakeboarding, climbing and boxing. I’m constantly on the lookout for new activities that take me out of my comfort zone and provide me with a sense of adventure and fulfilment.” Can you tell us a little about the difference between your previous position at AFI and now at KLM E&M? “In my previous position as Sales Manager in Miami, I mainly focused on expanding the E&M market in the Americas and customer relations. It was a dynamic role with a strong emphasis on achieving sales targets and customer satisfaction. My responsibilities have now shifted to supporting our EVP, Ton Dortmans, in relation to more operational and strategic initiatives.
While my previous role was more externally focused, my current role is more internal within E&M and KLM. Both roles are fast-paced and require the ability to adapt, and navigate complex issues with cross-functional teams. My current position allows me to contribute at a more strategic level within the organisation’s leadership team.” What do you like about Dutch culture? “The directness! It’s quite refreshing. No detours, just straight to the point, which makes interactions more efficient and transparent. And I really enjoy the humour here. The Dutch have a dry, witty sense of humour and enjoy everyday situations. Their humour is also incredibly inclusive. It’s not about ridiculing others, but about sharing a laugh together.” What do you miss about home? “Home for me has been in many places - I have lived in Morocco, France, Sweden, England and the US. Each place has left its unique mark. In any case, I miss the unforgettable moments I spent, immersing myself in each culture and connecting with it, which is really unique to each country.
Home for me has never been one location, it’s a collection of experiences and memories from everywhere I have lived. And a sense of belonging somewhere, no matter where I am.” Could you define a particular goal you hope to achieve in 2024? “2024 has been a busy year for me so far, because I’ve moved to a new country, facing all the administrative challenges involved, starting a new job and immersing myself in a new culture. It’s a lot to tackle, but I thrive on challenges.
For the rest of the year, I strive to keep things exciting by, among other things, pushing myself to reach an advanced level in Dutch and by continuing to develop new skills. Professionally, I thrive in environments that challenge me and encourage me to achieve personal growth. Why settle for less?” If you had to name something special that stood out for you during your last few months working here at E&M, what would it be? “The genuine warmth within E&M. From the welcoming atmosphere from day one to everyone’s caring and supportive nature; it’s like working within a big, supportive family. Clearly, we are all dedicated, hardworking individuals who know how to cooperate closely and have fun!”
