The Safety Themes form the basis of the safety management system. They cover the key areas on which the organisation focuses to ensure safety, and are fully aligned with KLM's vision. The themes are:

  • Leadership
  • Proficiency
  • Competence
  • Compliance with laws and regulations
  • Culture & behaviour

The Safety Principles are the fundamental rules and guidelines the organisation follows to support the Safety Themes. The intention is for everyone to comply with them during daily work. These Safety Principles are:

  • Work safely
  • Stick to the rules
  • Report unsafe situations
  • Help colleagues and challenge each other
  • Be fit to work

The Safety Objectives are the specific goals the organisation pursues to achieve the Safety Principles. These goals include:

  • Controlling operational safety.
  • Promoting a safety culture in which employees are encouraged to report unsafe situations.
